About the Item
Napoleonic Foot Grenadiers – Chasseur, Grenadier, and Flag Bearer, 1859
This striking pair of hand-colored lithographs portrays elite infantrymen of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard in their full regalia. Drawn by Auguste Raffet and engraved by Charles Colin, the prints were published in Paris in 1859 by Furne Fils as part of the grand illustrated volume Napoléon Ier et la Garde Impériale, featuring historical commentary by Eugène Fieffé.
In the first scene, two seasoned soldiers stand side by side: a Grenadier à Pied and a Chasseur à Pied. Both are outfitted in formal blue and white uniforms with red epaulettes and tall bearskin caps, distinguished by plume and badge. Their upright stances, full kit, and shoulder belts with cartridge boxes reflect the ceremonial discipline and elite status of the Imperial Guard's infantry. While the grenadier often held a more senior combat position, the chasseur was valued for speed and maneuverability within the same formation.
The second print highlights the Porte Drapeau des Grenadiers à Pied, or standard bearer of the Foot Grenadiers. Shown saluting with pride, he holds the regimental flag of the Guard, richly embroidered in red, white, and blue, crowned with the imperial eagle. Behind him stands a formation of similarly uniformed guardsmen, symbolizing loyalty, unity, and the martial spirit of Napoleon’s most trusted troops. The flag itself is a powerful emblem of the regiment’s identity and honor, and its bearer held a deeply respected position in the ranks.
Auguste Raffet, celebrated for his historical accuracy and dramatic compositions, brings these figures to life with expressive detail and deep respect for the era’s military culture. His work remains a cornerstone of Napoleonic iconography.
