About the Item
New Zealand Flax, Plantain Lily & Flame Flower – Antique Botanical Prints 1897
This set of three vibrant chromolithographs comes from Edward Step’s Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse (1897). Each plate depicts a striking ornamental plant rendered with fine detail and rich coloration, reflecting the late 19th-century fascination with exotic garden flora.
Plate 267 illustrates the New Zealand Flax (Phormium tenax), a hardy perennial native to New Zealand known for its strong, fibrous leaves historically used by the Māori for weaving. The depiction captures the robust strap-like foliage with precision. Plate 268 features the Plantain Lily (Funkia ovata), more commonly recognized today as Hosta. Its lush foliage and purple trumpet-shaped flowers are shown both in bloom and in botanical dissection. Plate 269 presents the Flame Flower (Kniphofia aloides), sometimes called the Red Hot Poker, a dramatic perennial from South Africa admired for its tall, fiery spikes of tubular flowers.
Together, these plates highlight three plants celebrated for both their ornamental beauty and cultural significance. The chromolithographs not only appealed to gardeners of the Victorian and Edwardian periods but also documented the diversity of plant life available to European collectors at the time.
Condition report: Bright and well-preserved impressions with strong color retention. Very light toning consistent with age; margins clean and suitable for framing. (Sold as prints without frame).
Framing tips: These three would display beautifully as a triptych. A natural wood or dark green frame with a cream mat would emphasize the botanical tones. Alternatively, a gold frame with a wide off-white mat would lend them a more classical appearance, perfect for a refined interior.
