About the Item

Set of 3 Biblical Engravings – St. Luke: Apostle Simon, Simeon’s Prophecy & Christ’s Circumcision (1735) This beautifully composed set of three antique engravings illustrates scenes from the Gospel of Luke, each printed in 1735 and executed using the copper engraving technique. The prints reflect the spiritual depth and artistic elegance of 18th-century religious illustration, combining classical architecture, expressive figures, and finely rendered symbolism. Together, they form a cohesive and compelling narrative suite from the New Testament, ideal for collectors or display as a triptych. The first engraving, from Luke VI.15, features St. Simon the Apostle, standing in powerful solitude atop a classical pedestal. Viewed from behind, he holds a scroll aloft while a radiant dove—symbolising the Holy Spirit—hovers above his head. The distant landscape shows minor biblical figures, adding depth to the spiritual setting. The image glorifies Simon’s calling and the divine inspiration of the apostles. The second print, from Luke II.34, depicts the moment of Simeon’s prophecy during the Presentation of Christ in the temple. Simeon, holding the infant Jesus, is surrounded by Mary, Joseph, Anna the prophetess, and worshippers. Above, cherubic angels appear in a cloudburst of light. The composition is rich with movement, symbolising joy, prophecy, and reverence, rendered with fine architectural and figural detail. The third engraving, from Luke II.21, illustrates the Circumcision of Christ. The infant Jesus lies on a table, surrounded by temple elders, Mary, and bystanders. Above, a cluster of cherubs hover in divine observation. The scene is set within a richly draped temple interior, with a sense of solemnity and ceremony. This work captures both the Jewish ritual and its Christian theological significance. Each engraving was created with copper plate engraving, resulting in precise, crisp lines and deep contrast. These prints likely originated from an illustrated Bible or religious compendium, intended to visualise scripture for personal devotion and instruction. Condition summary: All three engravings are in good condition. Light toning throughout with minor foxing mostly in the margins. Two prints show a light water stain in the upper part. No tears or repairs. Strong impressions with excellent detail. Paper remains firm and well-preserved. Framing tips: This set displays beautifully as a trio in matching classic dark wood, black, or gilded frames. Use off-white or warm ivory mounts to complement the cream-toned paper. To protect the fine engraving lines, UV-protective glass is recommended. Technique: Engraving Maker: Unknown, European, 1735
