About the Item
A pair of rare and quite beautiful pair of engravings of the city of Rome, printed in 1816. Both are printed from original copper plate.
Custom handmade French mat in the 18th century manner with artists gold banding on archival board.
Purchased in Palm Springs from the estate of Gerhardt Felgemaker, a noted antique print seller of engravings and etching. Ready for framing.
Print engraving is an artform that’s been around since the 15th century, but the actual method of engraving is an ancient one. With print engraving, which was used in art reproduction, a soft metal plate is used, typically copper, and the design is engraved into the metal using a special tool called a “burin.” A burin is a steel rod that’s sharpened diagonally at one end to create a controllable cutting edge.
Engravers use the burin to cut an image into the metal using a series of lines of varying width and depth. The length and depth of the lines helps to create different tones and shades. Deep lines will hold more ink than shallow ones, which produces a darker tone when printed.
Engraving tends to create a hard, thin line which creates crisp edges and sharp details that are hard to achieve with other printing methods.

From the 1660 Dutch edition of 'Icones et Segmenta Nobil. Signorum et Statuarum quae Romae extant' by Francois Perrier. This first Dutch edition was published by Nicolaas Visscher, printed in 1660 (Amsterdam). Although Perrier was French, he fell in love with Rome when he traveled there first in 1628 and then returning in 1635 and remaining for 10 years. While there, he completed this series of 100 views of Roman statuary in the various palaces and gardens, including the Medici and Vatican gardens and the Palazzo Farnese.
