About the Item

Mixed Media Inkjet print with silkscreen Measures: 24.00 x 18.00 in 61.0 x 45.7 cm Edition of 108 Signed and numbered by the artist. This work is part of the Vera List Anniversary Print Portfolio, created in recognition of the exceptional legacy of philanthropist Vera List. It was the generosity of Vera and her husband Albert that enabled the founding of the Vera List Art Project at Lincoln Center in 1962, MIT's List Arts Center in 1982, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School in 1992, among others. These institutions joined forces with Artspace and six internationally renowned artists to produce this print portfolio. In Paul Ramirez Jonas's Untitled print, a blank name tag is placed on an anonymous man's grey shirt, both greeting the audience and encouraging it to supply the subject's identity and backstory. Typical of the artist's oeuvre, this work is simultaneously engaging, participatory, and clever. Guided by an interest in participatory art, Paul Ramirez Jonas creates works that explore the notion of the unspoken contract between audience and artwork. The public nature of many of his commissions, coupled with their often-engaging premises, encourages viewers to complete and to validate the works, drawing the artist and his audience into an equal dialogue. For his Key to the City project (2010), the artist reproduced thousands of keys, which would unlock two dozen specific locations across New York City, that were ceremoniously presented to interested parties in Times Square. His works have been exhibited at the Sao Paolo Biennial, the Johannesburg Biennial, and the Venice Biennale, as well as at numerous institutions, including the New Museum, MoMA PS1, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Michael Bauer Baba Creme Limited Edition Print
By Phaidon
Located in New York, NY
Print Full bleed six-color silkscreen printed on Letra Ecru 300 gsm Measures: 34.00 x 24.50 in 86.4 x 62.2 cm Edition of 50 This work is signed and numbered by the artist on recto. The imagery for this edition is derived in part from what Michael Bauer calls his “telephone drawings”—quick, loose sketches made while talking on the phone or otherwise distracted. Bauer saves these doodles, no matter how rough or silly, and uses them as raw materials to be copied, scanned, altered, and combined. Bauer often works in series, making groups of paintings that metaphorically “talk back” to one another while simultaneously standing on their own as individual works. As he says, “Every painting that I do relies on the last twenty I did.” In a neat literalization of his process, this print includes the words “baba” and “creme,” recurring terms Bauer uses as verbal readymades for their phonetic qualities and mutable meanings. The amorphic, animalistic forms of German painter Michael Bauer are built upon color washes, meandering lines, and bulbous protrusions. Utilizing a variety of rendering techniques and materials, including pointillism, text and high-chroma colors, Bauer transforms his free-form compositions into dynamic and ornamented abstractions. He borrows from the colorful tradition of Modernist composition, juxtaposing collaged cutouts with a bevy of 20th century painting methodologies—including Cubist, Pop, and Surrealist techniques—to make the swirling paintings...

MICHAEL RAEDECKER Day at Night, 2023
Located in New York, NY
Laser printer pigment transfer, dispersion, acrylic, glitter, and thread on canvas. Each unique edition is accompanied by the new comprehensive monograph, Michael Raedecker, published by Phaidon Edition of 10 This work is signed, titled, numbered, dated by year on verso, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Phaidon and Artspace are pleased to present day at night, a new series of ten unique embroidered prints on canvas by contemporary artist Michael Raedecker. Released on the occasion of Raedecker’s new comprehensive Phaidon survey, each limited edition includes a signed copy of the publication as well as a signed Certificate of Authenticity. Since the beginning of his career as a painter, Raedecker has incorporated embroidery into his works as a means of challenging the conventional hierarchy of fine art techniques. His new day at night editions include thread, paint, and glitter hand-applied throughout, making each piece a singular work of art. Raedecker’s practice as a whole is engaged with a process of re-contextualizing familiar ideas and spaces, asking the viewer to question held assumptions. Swimming pools are a recurring subject for Raedecker, who is fascinated by the ways in which paintings of pools...

David Byrne Bulwark of Logic Limited Edition Print
By Phaidon
Located in New York, NY
Print Archival pigment print Measures: 20.00 x 16.00 in 50.8 x 40.6 cm Edition of 100 This work is signed on a label on the verso. David Byrne, legendary frontman of American band The Talking Heads and author of How Music Works, was born in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1952. Byrne is a multi-intrumentalist most known for his high-energy performances and distinctive, wide-ranging voice. He formed The Talking Heads with fellow RISD student, Chris Frantz, and Frantz's girlfriend, Tina Weymouth, in 1975 while living in New York City. In 1990 he founded the world music record label Luaka Bop, which released music from artists including Os Mutantes, Tom Ze, and Zap Mama. Byrne's solo career has been broad and multi-disciplinary. Since the 1990s, Byrne has exhibited his visual artwork at numerous galleries including Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York City. In 2006 he released Arboretum, a collection of his philosophical drawings, published by McSweeney's. Byrne's drawings are what he calls "mental maps of imaginary territory." Says Byrne, "if you can draw a relationship, it can exist... the world keeps opening up, unfolding, and just when we expect it to be closed—to be a sealed sensible box—it shows us something completely surprising." In 2010, Byrne exhibited his piece "Guitar Pedals...

Burt Barr: The Long Dissolve Limited Edition Print
By Phaidon
Located in New York, NY
PHOTOGRAPH Print made with archival pigments on fine art rag paper with glossy finish 12.00 x 17.00 in 30.5 x 43.2 cm Edition of 250This work comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and an artist signed label on verso. "I shot the video in 2000, in my home in SoHo. I knew prior to shooting what I wanted to do and I envisioned the piece exactly as it turned out. First, I experimented with a metal cookie tin placed on a hot stove. It didn't work because the ice cube melted too quickly. I tried a hairdryer but as the cube melted, the hair-blower blew the remaining cube away. Thus, I let the cube melt on it's own accord in real time. It took about three hours to fully dissolve into a puddle of water. I used a glass plate on Glassene paper: all that transparency made the black lines of the plate look line a charcoal line drawing. The title is important because it precisely explains the work: The Long Dissolve is exactly of an ice cube dissolving." —Burt Barr Claiming that "black and white are the only two colors I'll ever need," Burt Barr is a believer in the single take and the static shot. Meant to be projected directly onto a wall and looped for continual viewing, his films equate more to hanging drawings or black and white photographs than they are moving pictures...
