About the Item

Primula pedemontana and Alpine Toadflax, hand-coloured print, 1874 This exquisite hand-coloured lithograph from 1874 features two charming alpine species: Primula pedemontana and Linaria hepaticaefolia, commonly referred to as Alpine Toadflax. The print comes from the second series of Alpine Plants, a richly illustrated Victorian botanical work published in London by George Bell & Sons. It exemplifies the 19th-century passion for both scientific accuracy and artistic elegance in botanical documentation. At the top of the print is Primula pedemontana, a striking primrose species native to the Piedmont region of the Italian Alps. It is characterized by its deep reddish-violet flowers arranged in a loose rosette and its bold, succulent green leaves. This high-altitude plant is valued by alpine gardeners for its vivid colour and compact habit. Below it is Linaria hepaticaefolia, or Alpine Toadflax, a trailing plant with soft, ivy-like leaves and delicate, pale lilac flowers tinged with white and yellow. It thrives on rocky slopes and crevices and adds a touch of elegance to any alpine or rock garden. Its soft form and flowing habit contrast beautifully with the upright structure of the primula. Each detail has been carefully captured and coloured by hand, making this print not only a scientific reference but also a work of art. The colours remain vibrant and clean, with precise shading that enhances the natural texture and structure of each plant. The print is presented on thick, lightly toned paper with ample margins, ideal for framing. Perfect for botanical art collectors or anyone seeking to bring the charm of alpine flora into their interior space, this antique print is both timeless and decorative. Condition summary and framing tips: Well-preserved with vibrant colours and only minor edge wear. Best framed with a soft cream or pale green mat and a walnut or dark gold frame to complement both the earthy tones and vivid florals of the print.
