About the Item

The Amboinese Cabinet of Curiosities was a work by Georg Eberhard Rumphius, and included many engravings of sea shells and crustaceans. The German edition of the book was financed by Johann Balthasar Probst, publisher in Augsburg. As for the print itself, it features an elaborate ornamental design typical of the Baroque period, with various figures and motifs that suggest a fanciful or mythological theme. The central cartouche is surrounded by a variety of figures, including putti (cherubic figures), one of whom is holding a shield with the text, and a snail. The detailed etching technique and the presence of figures from nature and mythology are indicative of a time when such embellishments were common in literature, designed to captivate and intrigue the reader. The image is rich in symbolism and ornate details, which would likely appeal to collectors of antique prints. More research is needed.

Masterpieces of Architecture and Ornamentation: Decorative Title Page from 1766
Located in Langweer, NL
This is the title page from "Recueil Des Plus Beaux Édifices Anciens et Modernes," a compilation celebrating the finest architectural designs and decorative works, published in 1761 and renewed in 1766. The engraving features an elaborate frame adorned with classical columns, cherubs, and cartouches. At the top, a medallion portrait is prominently displayed, flanked by richly detailed ornaments. Jacobs Vignellius, whose name appears on the medallion in the engraving, is not a widely recognized historical figure. His inclusion in the artwork might refer to an individual associated with architecture, design, or art history at the time. It is possible he was a patron, contributor, or editor connected to this collection of architectural and decorative works. Below, a collection of artistic and architectural elements, including a globe, drapery, and tools, symbolizes the artistic endeavors of the period. The engraving is signed by Babel as the engraver and P. Audouin as the publisher. Translation of Text: "Recueil Des Plus Beaux Édifices Anciens et Modernes. Including canopies, chimneys, doors, sideboards, altars, several organ cases, pulpits, confessionals, and others; works of carpentry, as well as innovations in ironwork such as grilles, balconies, railings for staircases, gates, hinges, and other items made by master craftsmen. From various pieces chosen and executed in gold and silver, comprising candelabras, chandeliers, candlesticks, lavers, lanterns, and other ornamental objects. Furthermore, church ornaments and the apparatus used for holy water basins and other sacred items, carved and painted decorations, and objects used for public ceremonies. Including the finest parts of architecture and ornamentation, executed according to the principles of art and proportion. Newly revised and corrected based on the most beautiful examples in this field. Dedicated to lovers of fine arts. Published in 1761 and renewed in 1766." Analysis: This title page exemplifies the Rococo style, characterized by intricate detailing, symmetry, and an emphasis on elegance and sophistication. The inclusion of cherubs and a medallion portrait underscores the celebratory nature of the publication. The ornate design of the title page reflects the opulence of the content, aimed at art and architecture enthusiasts. It serves both as an introduction to the collection and as a work of art in its own right. Potential Keywords for Catalog: Architectural engravings, 18th-century design, Rococo architecture, Jacques Rigaud...
