Regular Canon of the Order of St. James of Spain in Choir Attire, 1791 Engraving

About the Item

Regular Canon of the Order of St. James of Spain in Choir Attire This hand-colored engraving portrays a regular canon of the Order of St. James in Spain, depicted in traditional choir attire. The figure stands holding a book, symbolizing the scholarly and spiritual focus of the order. The distinct black robe with white surplice and a prominent red cross on the chest highlights the canon's religious commitment. The engraved title is bilingual, reflecting the international reach of the order and its influence across Europe. This print is part of the renowned 18th-century series Illustrations of All Spiritual and Secular Orders. Published as individual booklets from 1779 to 1791, this work aimed to catalog the uniforms and attire of various orders, serving as an important historical reference. The original intention was to document the unique vestments and hierarchical distinctions of both ecclesiastical and knightly orders. The Order of St. James of the Sword, founded during the Reconquista, was dedicated to protecting pilgrims and fighting in defense of Christianity. This engraving captures the solemnity and dignity of its members, making it a fascinating artifact for historians and collectors alike. Condition Report: This engraving is in very good condition, with vibrant hand-coloring and light toning consistent with its age. Margins are clean, with minimal foxing. Slight wear at the edges does not affect the image or text. Framing Tip: A classic black or dark wood frame with a white mat would complement the engraving’s historical significance and emphasize the fine detailing. Consider an archival-quality mat and UV-protective glass to preserve the hand-coloring and delicate paper. This exquisite print offers a glimpse into the ceremonial attire of one of Europe’s most storied religious orders, making it an excellent addition to any collection of historical engravings or ecclesiastical artifacts.

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
