About the Item

Set of Antique Chromolithographs of Waders – Ruff and Common Snipe, c.1890 A pair of fine antique chromolithographs depicting European waders in detailed natural habitats. The first plate shows the Ruff (Calidris pugnax), a group of birds in varied plumage, including males, females, and juveniles, gathered on marshy ground near water. Known for their elaborate breeding plumage and striking courtship displays, the Ruff is a highly distinctive shorebird. The second plate depicts the Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago), with one bird at rest in the reeds and another in flight overhead. The artist has carefully captured the long straight bill, cryptic plumage, and wetland habitat typical of this species. Both plates bear the monogram “JK” and were produced in the late 19th century as part of an ornithological series. The chromolithographic process gives rich depth and subtle gradations of color, resulting in lifelike portrayals that are scientifically accurate yet highly decorative. Together, these two prints form a complementary pair, highlighting characteristic species of European wetlands and meadows. They hold both natural history significance and strong decorative appeal. Condition report: Very good condition. Strong coloration, minor age toning to margins, and faint handling marks consistent with age. Plate marks visible, confirming authenticity. No tears or major blemishes. Sold unframed. Framing tips: These two prints make an ideal pair for display. Frame them in matching dark wood or black frames with ivory mats to emphasize the fine coloration of the birds and create a balanced set. Gilt edges can add a classic touch, enhancing their antique character. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: J.K. (artist/engraver), c.1890, Europe
