About the Item
Set of 3 antique botanical lithographs – Lady’s Slipper, Maranta & Canna, 1897
This set of three original hand-colored lithographs was published in Edward Step’s *Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse* (London, 1897), a richly illustrated late Victorian work celebrating ornamental plants. These plates exemplify the period’s fascination with both exotic orchids and striking foliage plants, rendered with scientific accuracy and artistic elegance.
The first plate shows the *Lady’s Slipper Orchid (Cypripedium insigne)*, one of the most admired slipper orchids of the 19th century, with its golden-yellow pouch-like bloom, mottled petals, and striking spotted details. The second plate depicts *Maranta bicolor var. kerchoviana*, known today as one of the prayer plants, treasured for its broad decorative leaves with striking patterns, alongside its delicate lilac flowers. The third plate features *Indian Shot (Canna hybrids)*, celebrated for its flamboyant red, orange, and yellow flowers and lush foliage, which made it a popular choice for Victorian gardens and hothouses.
Together, these three plates reflect the diversity of horticultural interest at the time, ranging from tropical orchids to exotic foliage plants and bold-flowering hybrids. Today, they are highly collectible both as botanical records and as decorative works of art.
Condition report:
Very good condition. Strong original hand-coloring preserved. Some minor toning and light foxing at sheet edges, not affecting the images. Wide margins and visible plate marks intact. Not sold with frame.
Framing tips:
This set works beautifully when displayed together. Frame in matching dark wood or black frames with ivory mats for a refined presentation. A green or gold inner line on the mat will enhance the vibrancy of the flowers and leaves.
