About the Item

Set of 3 Antique Greek Architecture and Ornament Prints from 1887, Neoclassical This exceptional set of three antique prints offers a detailed and inspiring look at the richness of ancient Greek architecture, sculpture, and decorative art. These prints originate from the landmark 1887 German design publication *Der Ornamentenschatz*, which compiled hundreds of ornamental designs from major historical styles across the globe. The series was compiled by H. Dolmetsch, a noted architectural historian and design educator based in Stuttgart, Germany. The first print in the set presents a masterful study of classical Greek architectural elements rendered in fine monochrome linework. Central to the composition is a beautifully detailed Caryatid figure, flanked by Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian capitals, acanthus ornaments, winged mythological beasts, and sculptural lion protomes. The focus is on proportion, structure, and the expressive power of sculptural detail, reflecting the architectural ideals of harmony, balance, and strength that define the classical Greek aesthetic. The second print bursts with color, showcasing Greek polychrome architectural decorations in their original vivid hues. Featuring painted acroteria, meanders, anthemion friezes, and lion-head spouts, it illustrates how ancient Greek buildings were far more colorful than often imagined. Rich reds, blues, golds, and greens fill the page with energy, giving us insight into the decorative schemes used on temples and public buildings. The third print centers on Greek ceramic design and figure decoration. It includes various border patterns used on vases and amphorae, as well as a central image of a classical Greek woman playing the aulos (double flute). The surrounding decorative bands include stylized palmettes, wave scrolls, rosettes, and figural friezes showing goats and rams, all drawn from authentic Greek pottery motifs. The black-figure and red-figure traditions are both referenced, showing the range of visual expression in Greek ceramic art. Together, these prints form a comprehensive and beautiful representation of classical Greek visual language and design mastery. Originally produced using the chromolithographic technique, they preserve the color vibrancy and fine detail intended by the publisher. Condition: All three prints are in very good antique condition. The colors are well-preserved, and the paper shows only minimal signs of age, such as light foxing or slight toning. There are no tears or major blemishes. All margins are intact, and the reverse sides are blank. Framing Tips: To create a timeless and sophisticated display, consider framing the prints individually in matching frames with generous off-white or ivory mats. A classic wood or gilded frame will echo the Greco-Roman aesthetic, while museum glass will help protect the rich colors and paper from UV exposure. These pieces also look striking as a trio arranged in a vertical or horizontal gallery format. Perfect for classical interiors, design studios, or academic settings.
