About the Item

Set of 3 antique orchid lithographs – Dendrobium & Cattleya species, 1897 This set of three original hand-colored lithographs showcases some of the most admired orchids of the 19th century, published in 1897 in Edward Step’s Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse. Printed in London, this series combined accuracy of botanical science with decorative appeal, making it one of the most collectible late Victorian works on cultivated plants. The first plate features Dendrobium nobile, a species native to Southeast Asia, celebrated for its clusters of soft pink blossoms and elegant growth form. The second plate shows *Dendrobium farmeri var. aureoflavum*, with its dramatic cascading sprays of golden-yellow flowers, each marked with a deep orange throat. The third plate depicts *Cattleya mossiae*, often known as the Easter Orchid, with its large, ruffled petals in shades of rose and crimson, highlighted with a fiery yellow center. These three plates exemplify the Victorian passion for orchids, which were prized not only as horticultural treasures but also as status symbols during the great orchid mania of the 19th century. Today, they remain highly decorative prints, ideal for collectors, botanical enthusiasts, or elegant interior display. Condition report: Very good condition overall. Rich original hand-coloring intact. Light marginal toning consistent with age, but no tears or folds. Plate marks visible, wide margins preserved. They are sold unframed. Framing tips: These three orchid plates work beautifully as a set. For a refined display, frame them together in a horizontal arrangement or individually in matching frames. Cream or ivory mats with slim dark wood or black frames will highlight the flowers’ vibrancy, while a gilt inner line can add elegance. Technique: Hand-colored lithographs Maker: Edward Step, London, 1897
