About the Item

Set of 4 Renaissance Design Prints by H. Dolmetsch – Gobelins, Enamels, and More This stunning group of four antique prints captures the vibrant decorative arts of the Renaissance through the masterful work of German artist H. Dolmetsch, published by Jul. Hoffmann in Stuttgart in the late 19th century. The prints form part of the celebrated Ornamentenschatz series, an ambitious visual encyclopedia of historic ornament that has inspired generations of designers, decorators, and collectors. The first plate, titled Gobelin-Weberei, showcases elaborate tapestry designs associated with French Gobelin weaving. These vertical bands are filled with lush floral motifs, playful putti, exotic birds like peacocks, mythological figures, and architectural flourishes. The vivid chromolithography captures the complexity of textile arts in their most decorative form. The second plate, Emailmalerei auf Metall, Fayencemalerei und Metalleinlagen, is a celebration of Renaissance enamel painting on metal, faience decoration, and metal inlays. Highlighting vessels, cabinets, and decorative panels, it is rich in ornamental symbolism and saturated color. Classical influences are woven into fantastical forms, demonstrating the Renaissance love of combining function and artistry. Next is the plate Flachornamente verschiedener Techniken, offering flat ornamental patterns in black-and-white with elegant precision. This plate, though monochrome, reveals the mathematical complexity of Renaissance pattern design. Borders, arabesques, scrollwork, and panels are shown in a variety of techniques used across woodwork, leather tooling, metalwork, and stone carving. Finally, the Deutsche Renaissance plate focuses on wall and ceiling painting, inlaid wood panels (intarsia), and linen embroidery from the German Renaissance tradition. It includes a rich central composition with heraldic and angelic figures, as well as decorative panels and borders that blend Gothic and Classical influences. This page in particular shows the delicate linework and color harmony that characterize Dolmetsch’s style. Heinrich Dolmetsch was a significant figure in the 19th-century historicist design movement. His work meticulously recorded the visual traditions of European decorative arts, serving as both a study tool and a source of inspiration. The Ornamentenschatz volumes in which his plates appeared brought together historical ornamentation from multiple cultures and periods in one comprehensive visual collection. These prints are not only rare historical documents but also striking visual works of art. Their decorative potential makes them ideal for interiors that value both history and design. Condition: The prints are in very good condition for their age. Minor signs of age such as light toning, faint foxing, or small edge wear may be present, but they do not detract from the overall appeal. The colors remain vibrant and the printing sharp. Framing Tips: To enhance their visual impact and protect them from environmental damage, these prints should be framed using acid-free mats and UV-protective glass. A frame in gold, dark wood, or even matte black would pair well with the rich palettes and historic themes. Consider displaying them as a series for maximum effect, either horizontally as a panel or vertically in a column layout depending on your space.

Set of Four Antique French Religious Carbon Prints by Maison AD. Braun & Cie
Located in COLMAR, FR
These four original carbon prints have been made by the French publishing house Maison Braun & Cie. (see labels on the backs). The company was launched in 1853 in the town of Dornach, Alsace, France by Adolphe Braun (1812-1877). The company specialized in (large) reproductions of artworks and came to open offices in Paris (1868), London and New York. In 1883 the company, which had been taken over by Adolphe's son and other family members, became the official and sole photographer/publisher for the Louvre Museum in Paris and other stately owned museums in France. They also had a very impressive sale list of images from other reputed European museums and collections. The company was taken over in the 1950s and the brand ceased to exist in 1969. This set consists of four framed, original carbon prints of late middle-age religious paintings by Italian masters. These prints most likely date from late 1800s or early 1900s. The two large angels are sections from the Linaiuoli Triptych, dated 1433 and painted by the Italian artist Fra Angelico (circa 1387-1455). He is often referred to as the "painter of angels". The female saint holding a book is from the artwork "Annunciation" by the Italian painter Fra Filippo Lippi...
