About the Item

Snake Print of Grass Snake and Long-Nosed Whip Snake, c.1850, Orbigny This striking 19th-century hand-colored engraving, Reptiles Pl. 10, features two beautifully illustrated snakes: the Grass Snake (Tropidonotus torquatus, now Natrix natrix) and the Long-Nosed Whip Snake (Dryinus nasutus, now Ahaetulla nasuta). It was created for Charles Dessalines d'Orbigny’s monumental work Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle, published in Paris in the mid-1800s and known for its exquisite natural history plates. At the top of the print, figure 1 shows the Grass Snake, depicted in muted earth tones and coiled in a damp, grassy landscape. This non-venomous species is native to Europe and is often found near water. It is known for the distinctive yellow collar behind its head, a detail accurately rendered by the artist. A familiar sight across the European countryside, the Grass Snake is harmless and plays a beneficial role in controlling amphibian populations. In figure 2, the print turns to the exotic forests of Asia, illustrating the Long-Nosed Whip Snake in vibrant hues of green and turquoise. With its elongated, pointed snout and slender body, this tree-dwelling species is known for its exceptional camouflage and arboreal agility. Found in tropical Asia, it often rests motionless among foliage, blending seamlessly with its surroundings. The fluid, curling posture captured here showcases the artist’s attention to anatomical grace. The artwork was drawn by Oudart and engraved by Corbie, both respected illustrators of the 19th century. Their work for Orbigny’s publication aimed to combine scientific accuracy with aesthetic appeal, and this plate is a fine example of that balance. Each specimen is not only accurately described but also presented within its natural habitat. This print is ideal for collectors of zoological illustrations, natural history enthusiasts, or anyone seeking refined decorative art with educational value. Condition Summary: Light foxing along the outer margins, central image clean and vibrant. Plate impression strong, hand coloring preserved. No tears or repairs. Framing Tips: Use a natural wood or gold frame with a cream or light olive mat to complement the earthy and green tones. UV-protective glass is recommended to safeguard the delicate coloring.
