Title: St. Thomas Apostle Engraving – John XX Doubting Thomas c.1735
Description:
This detailed antique engraving titled “St. Thomas the Apostle” depicts Thomas, also known as “Doubting Thomas,” referencing John Chapter XX, Verse 27, where Jesus commands him to touch his wounds to believe in the resurrection. Created circa 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving portrays Thomas standing with dignified presence on a stone pedestal, symbolising his apostolic authority and role as a missionary.
Thomas is depicted with a radiant halo, wearing flowing robes, holding an open book representing the Gospel in his left hand and a long spear in his right, which is his traditional attribute symbolising his martyrdom in India. The spear is adorned with an ornate banner, enhancing its visual prominence. In the background, a group of figures is shown, likely depicting his missionary travels and ultimate martyrdom among distant lands.
The engraving is executed in fine copperplate technique, renowned for its precise linear detail, cross-hatching, and tonal shading, enabling the artist to capture both symbolic attributes and realistic drapery folds. Though unsigned, it is stylistically aligned with engravings produced after designs by Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart, widely used in English folio Bibles of the early 18th century as theological illustrations and visual teaching tools.
Collectors value such engravings for their religious, historical, and artistic significance, offering insight into early Protestant devotional life, biblical illustration traditions, and the honouring of apostolic figures in visual culture.
Condition summary:
Good condition with light age toning and some minor foxing, mainly in the margins. The plate impression remains strong, with engraved details well preserved. Slight edge wear consistent with age, no major tears or losses.
Framing tips:
Frame this engraving in a dark wood or black moulding with gold inner edging for a classic ecclesiastical presentation. Use a warm cream or ivory mount board to complement the aged paper tone. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve the engraving’s fine line work and prevent further paper ageing. This print will display beautifully in a study, library, or gallery wall of apostolic and biblical engravings, enriching any collection with its spiritual narrative and historical depth.
