Tinted Lithograph of the Great Basin from Canada de las Uvas, 1856

About the Item

Title: Tinted Lithograph of the Great Basin from Canada de las Uvas, 1856 Description: This atmospheric lithograph, "The Great Basin from the Canada de las Uvas with Lost Mountains in the Distance," portrays the vast and remote wilderness of the American West as viewed during the mid-19th century. This is the border between the Sierra Nevada and the Mojave Desert. Derived from a sketch by Charles Koppel and lithographed by A. Hoen & Co., this print captures the dramatic expanse of the Great Basin, with its undulating terrain and distant mountain ranges fading into the horizon. Published in 1856 as Plate VIII in the Pacific Railroad Survey reports, this piece was part of the monumental effort to chart viable routes for a transcontinental railroad. The human figures on horseback in the foreground lend scale to the immensity of the landscape and underscore the isolation faced by those traversing these wild regions. The use of tinted lithography brings depth and subtle color gradients to the piece, emphasizing the contrast between the rugged foreground and the hazy, distant mountains. It beautifully blends scientific precision with artistic composition, serving as both an archival record and a work of art. Condition: Excellent, with vibrant tones and minimal signs of aging. Slight foxing in the margins does not detract from the overall presentation. Framing Tip: A matte in a neutral tone such as soft gray or cream will highlight the subtle hues of the landscape, while a dark wooden or metallic frame will complement the print's historical significance. This lithograph is ideal for display in a study, library, or as part of a curated gallery wall, evoking the majesty and history of the American frontier.
