Turkish Architectural Ornamentation in Glazed Ceramics from Ornamentenschatz

About the Item

This vibrant print by H. Dolmetsch is a fine example from the "Ornamentenschatz" collection, published by Verlag J. Hoffmann, Stuttgart, in 1887. This particular piece showcases Turkish ornamental designs, characterized by their intricate patterns and rich color palette. The print illustrates the architectural decorations often found in glazed ceramic and clay works, which are typical in Turkish art. The panels demonstrate a mixture of floral motifs intertwined with geometric patterns, a hallmark of Islamic art that emphasizes the unity of design and spirituality. The color scheme—predominantly deep blues and greens punctuated with red and yellow accents—adds depth and vibrancy, reflecting the luxurious aesthetic often associated with Ottoman art. This print is particularly attractive for its sophisticated use of symmetry and the meticulous attention to detail, which captures the essence of traditional Turkish decorative arts. Such works are valued not only for their beauty but also as cultural representations of a rich artistic heritage.

Masterpieces of Architecture and Ornamentation: Decorative Title Page from 1766
Located in Langweer, NL
This is the title page from "Recueil Des Plus Beaux Édifices Anciens et Modernes," a compilation celebrating the finest architectural designs and decorative works, published in 1761 and renewed in 1766. The engraving features an elaborate frame adorned with classical columns, cherubs, and cartouches. At the top, a medallion portrait is prominently displayed, flanked by richly detailed ornaments. Jacobs Vignellius, whose name appears on the medallion in the engraving, is not a widely recognized historical figure. His inclusion in the artwork might refer to an individual associated with architecture, design, or art history at the time. It is possible he was a patron, contributor, or editor connected to this collection of architectural and decorative works. Below, a collection of artistic and architectural elements, including a globe, drapery, and tools, symbolizes the artistic endeavors of the period. The engraving is signed by Babel as the engraver and P. Audouin as the publisher. Translation of Text: "Recueil Des Plus Beaux Édifices Anciens et Modernes. Including canopies, chimneys, doors, sideboards, altars, several organ cases, pulpits, confessionals, and others; works of carpentry, as well as innovations in ironwork such as grilles, balconies, railings for staircases, gates, hinges, and other items made by master craftsmen. From various pieces chosen and executed in gold and silver, comprising candelabras, chandeliers, candlesticks, lavers, lanterns, and other ornamental objects. Furthermore, church ornaments and the apparatus used for holy water basins and other sacred items, carved and painted decorations, and objects used for public ceremonies. Including the finest parts of architecture and ornamentation, executed according to the principles of art and proportion. Newly revised and corrected based on the most beautiful examples in this field. Dedicated to lovers of fine arts. Published in 1761 and renewed in 1766."
