About the Item
Uriah Heep from David Copperfield – Dickens Character Lithograph by Kyd, c.1889
Description:
This expressive lithograph features the infamously obsequious Uriah Heep from *David Copperfield* (1849–50) by Charles Dickens, illustrated by the noted caricaturist Joseph Clayton Clarke, better known by his pseudonym “Kyd.” Issued around 1889 by Raphael Tuck & Sons, this series of chromolithographs captures the most memorable Dickensian figures with exaggerated flair and theatrical poise.
Uriah Heep is one of Dickens’ most sinister villains, renowned for his feigned humility, oily manners, and the repeated assertion that he is “a very ’umble person.” Kyd renders this duality brilliantly: Heep’s wiry frame is twisted into a grotesque pose of self-effacing servility, with his hands clasped in mock humility and a smirk betraying his underlying malice. His slouching gait, awkward bend, and flushed complexion are all emphasized to amplify his unsettling presence.
Kyd’s lithographic technique showcases delicate shading and layered coloring, with a minimal backdrop that allows Uriah’s striking figure to dominate. The background—soft, misty washes in dusty grey-blue and rusty red—adds visual weight to the otherwise light cream paper, enhancing the theatricality of the figure. His black suit and hunched form contrast sharply with the warm background, lending the image a dramatic air of deceit and tension.
Joseph Clayton Clarke was celebrated for his witty and psychologically nuanced depictions of Dickens characters, and Uriah Heep remains one of his most chilling triumphs. This print stands out for both its artistic quality and its literary fidelity.
Condition report:
Original chromolithograph, circa 1889. Slight foxing in the margins and minor edge toning, but no image loss or tears. The colors are fresh and the paper remains strong and stable.
Framing tips:
A dark mahogany or black frame paired with a pale cream or warm grey mat will highlight the sinister charm of the image. Consider an antiqued gold inner fillet to echo Victorian design sensibilities and draw out the subtle background tones.
