About the Item

Title: "Venngarn Castle, Uppland: A Dahlbergh and Swidde Masterpiece, c. 1695" Description: This enchanting hand-colored copper engraving from circa 1695 captures the grand Venngarn Castle in Uppland, Sweden, as it appeared in the late 17th century. The work, part of the esteemed collection "Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna," is attributed to Erik Dahlbergh for the architectural design and Willem Swidde for the engraving. Venngarn Castle boasts a rich history, with mentions dating back to the 1160s and ownership ties to Sweden's first Archbishop Stefan and later to King Gustav Vasa in the 1550s. By the time this engraving was made, the estate had undergone significant transformations under the direction of Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, who initiated extensive renovations in 1661. The illustration shows the castle adorned with arcade galleries and sculpted wooden terraces, the façades whitewashed and highlighted with decorative elements in various stone colors. Details around the windows are depicted in carbon black and red, while gray tones are used for corner chains, balustrades, and sculptures, both in wood and stone. The rooftops are shown clad with red-colored shavings, alluding to the opulence and grand architectural style of the period. This particular view of Venngarn Castle is a testament to the artistic endeavor to document Sweden's historical estates and their baroque splendor. The bustling scene depicted in the foreground, complete with carriages and elegantly dressed figures, adds a dynamic quality to the print, suggesting the vibrancy of life at Venngarn during its heyday. As a historical document, this engraving offers invaluable insight into the architectural heritage and societal customs of 17th-century Sweden. Venngarn Castle (Swedish: Venngarns slott) is located north of the town of Sigtuna in Uppland. In 1916–1997, it served as an institution for the rehabilitation of people suffering from alcoholism, and from 1997, it has served as a health center.
