About the Item

Whiting, Poor Cod, Pollack, and Saithe - Captivating Scandinavian Fish Lithograph This exceptional 19th-century lithograph from 'Skandinaviens Fiskar' features four iconic Scandinavian fish species: the Whiting (Gadus merlangus), Poor Cod (Gadus minutus), Pollack (Gadus pollachius), and Saithe (Gadus virens). Created by the talented Wilhelm von Wright and published by P. A. Norstedt & Söners Förlag in Stockholm, this print exemplifies the harmonious blend of scientific accuracy and artistic mastery that defines this renowned natural history series. At the top of the print, the Whiting (Gadus merlangus) is depicted with its slender, elongated body and characteristic lateral line that curves smoothly down the side. The soft golden-brown tones and subtle silver sheen highlight the sleek, streamlined shape typical of this prized commercial species. The accurate rendering of the delicate fins and the prominent chin barbel reflects the lifelike and scientific precision of von Wright's technique. Whiting are highly valued for their tender, white flesh and are commonly found in the colder waters of the North Sea and Atlantic. Below the Whiting lies the Poor Cod (Gadus minutus), notable for its smaller size and distinct reddish-brown coloration. The smooth gradient of color along its flanks and the subtle shading of the dorsal and pectoral fins showcase the artist’s skill in capturing both texture and dimension. Poor Cod are often caught as bycatch and are distinguished from larger cod species by their slimmer profile and shorter fins. The Pollack (Gadus pollachius), in the third position, stands out with its darker, greenish-brown back and lighter, silvery belly. The characteristic curved lateral line and prominent dorsal fin structure give it an athletic, muscular appearance, reflecting its active, predatory nature. Pollack are known for their agile swimming and are commonly found near rocky coastlines and offshore structures. At the bottom of the print is the Saithe (Gadus virens), also known as the Coalfish or Coley, depicted with a dark greenish back and a sleek, tapered body. The distinct dark lateral line runs straight along its body, contrasting with the paler sides and belly. Saithe are renowned for their firm, flavorful flesh and are commercially significant across northern Europe. The lithographic technique employed in this plate blends meticulous line work with vibrant hand coloring, creating a vivid and realistic portrayal of each fish. The careful application of natural hues and the precise anatomical rendering make this print a masterpiece of both scientific illustration and fine art. Condition: The print is preserved in very good condition, with vivid colors and crisp details that have withstood the test of time. Framing tips: To enhance its visual appeal and showcase the refined artistry, consider framing it with a classic dark wood or natural finish frame, complemented by a neutral or lightly colored mat. This piece would make an outstanding addition to any natural history collection or maritime-themed interior, celebrating the rich diversity of Scandinavian marine life.
