About the Item
Yellow Saxifrage and Siberian Squill, hand-coloured botanical print, 1874
This vivid hand-coloured botanical print from 1874 features two contrasting alpine plants: Saxifraga aizoides autumnalis (Yellow Saxifrage) and Scilla sibirica (Siberian Squill). Published in London by George Bell & Sons as part of the second series of Alpine Plants, this lithograph is a fine example of Victorian botanical illustration, created with scientific accuracy and artistic care.
On the left, Saxifraga aizoides autumnalis, also known as Autumn Yellow Saxifrage, is a hardy perennial native to alpine and arctic regions. It is characterized by its bright yellow, star-shaped flowers and thick, succulent-like foliage arranged in tight rosettes. This resilient plant thrives in moist rocky environments and is a favourite among rock garden enthusiasts.
On the right, Scilla sibirica, commonly called Siberian Squill, is a spring-flowering bulb known for its brilliant blue, nodding bell-shaped flowers and strap-like green leaves. Native to southwestern Russia and the Caucasus, it naturalizes easily and creates carpets of early colour in gardens. In this print, the delicate blue tones of the blossoms are beautifully contrasted against the vibrant greens of the foliage.
Each plate in the Alpine Plants series was first lithographed and then meticulously hand-coloured, making each print unique. The paper is a creamy, thick stock with ample margins, showing minor signs of age consistent with its date. The colours on this piece remain strong and fresh, especially the contrast between the golden yellow of the saxifrage and the deep blue of the squill.
This print is a lovely addition to any collection of botanical art, particularly for those interested in alpine flora. It is also ideal for framing in nature-themed interiors or garden rooms.
Condition summary and framing tips:
Very good condition with strong colour and some faint spots in the margins. A soft ivory or pale yellow mat with a medium oak or brushed silver frame will enhance both the blue and yellow tones of the flowers beautifully.
