18th Century French Handwoven Aubusson Tapestry, The "Colin-Maillard" Game

About the Item

This large, antique tapestry was woven in Aubusson, France, circa 1760. The colorful scene depicts a group of people playing the game "Colin-Maillard", or Blind Man's Buff, a very popular game in the 18th century. Beautiful red and blue hues are present throughout this magnificent tapestry, and the figures are finely dressed in historically accurate, 18th century French costume. The tapestry has been recently backed with a heavy white canvas fabric. The piece is in excellent condition and has its original, decorative border with scroll and floral decor. The illustrative, courtly tapestry would make an impressive entry to a large wall in a living room, entryway or dining room. Aubusson, a town on the river Creuse in central France, became a center of tapestry manufacture in the 17th and 18th centuries during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, Aubusson became the source for the aristocracy, hence the typically monumental sizes of Aubusson rugs and tapestries. Employing a method known as "warping" and executed on a low horizontal loom, the weavers of Aubusson were able to create an illusion of depth in their works. Aubusson textiles are also usually identified by their stylized framing motifs and neoclassical themes. Measures: 116" W x 89" H.

The Aubusson tapestry manufacture of the 17th and 18th century managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry. Tapestry manufacture at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, may have developed from looms in isolated family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source or the full-scale cartoons from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...
