About the Item

1960s Desso Studio Design Wall Carpet — Textile Art Height: 165 cm (65 in.) Width: 85 cm (33.5 in.) This striking wall carpet is a rare example of 1960s textile art by Desso, one of Europe’s most innovative carpet manufacturers of the postwar era. Executed in bold tones of red, burgundy, purple, orange, and cream, the piece features dramatic three-dimensional textures, braiding, and tufted surfaces, capturing the essence of avant-garde fiber art from the period. Desso, founded in 1930 in Oss (The Netherlands), was internationally acclaimed for its pioneering approach to modern carpet and textile design. By the 1960s and 1970s, Desso embraced the artistic spirit of the era, collaborating with leading studio designers to create wall hangings and rugs that transcended mere function and became true works of art. Their work often paralleled the fiber art movement led by artists such as Sheila Hicks and Magdalena Abakanowicz, yet remained distinctly rooted in Dutch modernism. This example, labeled “Studio Design” and woven in Dralon (100% acrylic), showcases the company’s experimental use of materials to achieve sculptural depth and vibrant coloration. The composition blends geometric rhythm with tactile richness, making it both a decorative focal point and a collectible design artifact. With its vivid palette and bold textures, this wall carpet embodies the optimism and radical creativity of the late 1960s, perfectly suited for collectors of mid-century modern, space age, or brutalist-inspired interiors. Condition: Excellent vintage condition, with vibrant colors and no notable losses. Original manufacturer’s label present on the reverse. The carpet will be shipped insured overseas. Cost of transport to the US, Euro 265. Colors may slightly vary due to photographic lighting sources or your monitor settings. Wear consistent with age and use.
