Contemporary Wool Wall Tapestry with Modern Shapes, Opus LXVII by Mira Sohlen
Located in 1204, CH
Each tapestry is called Opus followed by its chronological roman numeral in the order they were created. Opus is a latin word meaning a work, used to mean a particular piece of music by a composer. Furthermore, when Mira creates her tapestries she never envisions the final outcome; her vision is her process. Throughout the process, similar to the one of a musical composer, she aims to find patterns of beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. It is as if different shapes are dancing and her aim is to capture just the right moment where Opus becomes a visual and tactile form of music. Mira Sohlén...

‘Holistic’ Linen Wall Tapestry Handmade by Lawrence Kwakye
Located in Voorburg, NL
‘Holistic’, a handmade painting by Lawrence Kwakye consisting of Acrylic on Linen with a beech wooden frame. The holistic painting represents the abstract world of the unknown. A place of dematerialisation and dehumanisation where life is redefined in the eye of the beholder. The viewer is challenged to see the position of humanity from another perspective. Transhumanism and the concept of an uploaded human life form was the inspiration behind this work. An imagination of a science-fiction plot. A distinctive painting with an authentic layered effect; a unique aesthetic experience. Powerful and exclusive, only one of has been made. About the artist Lawrence Kwakye (1972, Utrecht) painted his first painting when he was thirteen and with it, unknowingly opened the door to his artistic career. The famous writer and illustrator Tomi Ungerer called him an ‘undeniable talent’ at the time and compared him to the main character in Albert Camus’ novel ‘The Stranger’. As the son of a Ghanaian father and Hungarian mother, raised in the Netherlands, he was constantly exposed to surprises and changes in life and as such automatically developed a ‘contrasting’ view of the world, essential for the magical layering in his later work. Nothing is what you think it is. After secondary school, Lawrence completed his study ‘Man and Leisure time’ at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, where Lidewij Edelkoort was a guiding force. Unmistakable heritage from that time is the functional and conceptual impact of the many paintings he continued to create alongside his job as designer. Until 2010 when he changed course, established himself as an independent artist and his artistic career gained momentum. Kwakye’s cultural diversity, his sense of aesthetics, his technical innovative drive and his fascination for transition, or in other words the process of change are clearly reflected in his current work. The result is accessible, the viewer picks it up straight away, but then seduces him into a discussion about what you actually see; it is what it is...

Contemporary Kilim Rapallo Designed by Piotr Niklas / Hand-Woven
Located in WARSZAWA, 14
The RAPALLO kilim opens a series inspired by the Memphis Milano aesthetic, which defined the colorful design style of the 1980s and 90s. The designer. Piotr Niklas, in his own unique way, transformed the realizations of such designers as Ettore Sottsass and Nathalie du Pasquier into his individual language of forms. Piotr used a refreshed, pastel color palette. The RAPALLO kilim is 100 x 190 cm, which makes it great for hanging it both vertically and horizontally. It works well as a decorative piece in the living room above the sofa, bed’s headboard, a background for a console or as a dominant decoration at the head of the table. A square meter of this fabric is a week’s worth of work of a professional weaver. The kilim was made in accordance with Bobowas traditions of weaving on a flax warp, while the weft is natural wool. Kilim designed by Piotr Niklas - Graduate of the European Academy of Arts in Warsaw, he has been designing for over a decade. He specializes in visual identity, poster design, user interface and webpage design especially for cultural institutions, video game developers and tech companies. For his Kilim DAWN he received the MUST HAVE at the Lódz Design Festival. Splot blends the finest tradition of Polish handcraft with modern and bold design. The kilim has a long and fascinating tradition in Poland. They were initially brought from the East to the nobles’ manors, with time becoming more domestic and produced locally. They captivated Modernist artists, such as Stanislaw Wyspianski or Zofia Stryjenska, who often worked in this medium. In the 1920s and ’30s, kilims decorated grand public buildings as well as private Modernist villas. After the war, they were made in many of Cepelia's (Central Folk Art and Crafts Union) workshops, both for the Polish market as well as for export, unfortunately, with time this noble craft was nearly forgotten. Kilims - stashed away in houses, stored in museums and attics, kindled my imagination. In times of rapid mass production, time in itself has become a great luxury. It takes around a week to hand weave a square meter of a kilim. In this laborious process, we acquire a product that is unique in every respect - no two tapestries are alike, just as no two loaves of bread are the same. A kilim integrates art with nature. They are not only decorative but also practical, improving acoustics and warming the interior. Kilims are Polish, although they arrived here from far away. Traditional craftsmanship for the modern home. Our dream of making modern Polish kilims...

Shop Vintage Tapestries on 1stDibs

Whether you hang them behind your bed as a dazzling alternative to a headboard or over the sofa as a large-scale focal point in the living room, vintage tapestries can introduce an array of textures and colors to any space in your home.

Woven wall hangings haven’t consistently enjoyed the popularity or earned the highbrow status that other types of wall decorations have over the years, at least not since the 1970s, which was somewhat of a heyday for tapestries. Today, however, these tactile works of art are seeing a renaissance, as modern weavers are forging new paths in the medium while the demand for antique and vintage tapestries continues to grow.

“We are drawn to texture in environments, and we see tapestries as a subtle layer of soft ornament,” says Lauren Larson of the New York design duo Material Lust. Indeed, and a lot of opportunity comes along when decorating with this distinctive brand of soft ornament.

Think of wall hangings as paintings created by hand with fabric instead of oil or watercolors. If you’re not simply securing your treasure to a wall with nails, pushpins or Velcro, tapestries can be stretched over a frame, used to create a canopy in a cozy living-room corner, hung from a rod or placed inside a shadowbox. And because this kind of textile art is hundreds of years old, options abound with respect to subjects and designs.

For richly detailed depictions of landscapes and garden scenes, look to antique Chinese tapestries and Japanese tapestries. Aubusson tapestries are ornate wall hangings manufactured in central France that are also characterized by romantic portrayals of nature. For weavers of mid-century modern tapestries, as well as those working in textile arts today, the styles and subject matter are too numerous to mention, with artists exploring experimental shapes, bold colors and provocative abstract designs.

Antique, new and vintage tapestries can make a room feel warm and welcoming — find yours on 1stDibs now.
