"Deer with Tree of Life", Art Deco-Modernist Embroidery in Deep Red and Green

About the Item

An important example of Modernist needlework and fabric design, this richly-colored embroidery panel depicts a tree of life, full of birds circling a tree expressed in the fashionable French Art Deco manner, flanked by two deer in purple. Some elements of the panel are clearly drawn from American folk art, while other elements -- including the stylized deer and the trunk of the tree -- are inspired by Modern design. This work was clearly influenced by Marguerite Zorach and her circle; Zorach was one of the first major American artists who embraced embroidery in the 1910s and 20s, producing some of the finest works of the period. This phenomenon has been described in "The Modern Embroidery Movement" by Cynthia Fowler. The frame, hand-carved and silvered, is clearly original. "Marguerite Zorach" has been incised on the reverse side of the frame, thought we do not believe that Zorach was the artist.
