About the Item

All original and authentic folk art American hand stitched early 19th century needlepoint sampler, wrought by "Ruthanna Stoke"; the namesake; in dark blue stitchery at the bottom center, along with the date of 1836. The alphabet is stitched four times in four different styles and five different colors. She has used maroon, dark blue, green, pink, and yellow throughout in no particular order. The first alphabet is in small capital letters; the second in a fancier, old English style; the third set is in a plainer more traditional style; while the fourth set is in a smaller font. There are two sets of numbers; the numbers one through ten at the top; and one to seven at the bottom. A broad 1 1/2" geometric rose floral, wreath and fern design decorates the entire perimeter. The needlepoint on cream linen is done very well and is in excellent and completely all original condition with no repairs or restoration of any kind. The colors are true and not faded, albeit, in the photographic image with the listing the lighter colors of pink and yellow are not as pronounced as the maroon, green or dark blue just by virtue of their natural pigment. I have not seen the multiplicity of colors used like this; that is, consecutively, with four random changing colors; and I find it wonderfully labor intensive and quite creative on behalf of this young school girl. A pair of pink and yellow urns with green flora, adorn each side of the bottom of the sampler to complete the design. The sampler is professionally housed in a (1 3/8" wide) more contemporary wooden frame in a vine, leaf, and fern raised pattern. This sampler is well done and is an excellent example of early American folk art. It would make a unique addition to an "Americana" collection, or simply represent a stand alone work of art. Dimensions: 13 1/2" high x 14 1/2" wide (actual sampler) 16 3/8" high x 17 3/8" wide (in frame) Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been in business for 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations. Thus, I am well qualified to inspect and evaluate the products I offer for sale and I guarantee this to be authentic and as I have described.
