About the Item

Hera, the Fearsome Queen of Olympus, Tapestry – Brussels Manufacture, 18th Century – No. 1535 Period: 18th Century Condition: Excellent condition Material: Wool & silk Width: 183 cm Height: 287 cm Depth: 0.5 cm Brussels Tapestry, 18th Century: The Apotheosis of Juno This tapestry depicts a mythological scene inspired by Greco-Roman tradition: the apotheosis of Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage, royalty, and women. Known as Hera in Greek mythology, Juno is portrayed here in all her divine majesty. The goddess, crowned and draped in a sumptuous cloak adorned with peacock feathers — the emblematic animal of Juno — is elevated into the sky by a host of winged putti (cherubs), celestial figures that emphasize the divine nature of the scene. She holds a golden scepter, symbolizing her sovereign authority alongside Jupiter (Zeus). Her starry garment, serene features, and airborne posture embody power, beauty, and majesty. The cloudy background and soft, diffused light suggest a heavenly realm, while the richness of detail and vibrancy of color reveal the technical refinement of the tapestry. A quintessential example of the Baroque taste for allegory and mythology, this tapestry reflects a courtly art where classical figures were reimagined to celebrate power, virtue, or feminine elegance. In keeping with tradition, this magnificent tapestry has undergone a thorough cleaning, the addition of a hand-sewn linen backing, and a meticulous inspection by our experts in our artisanal workshop. It is now ready to adorn your interior.
