About the Item

This is an old Japanese BORO, dating back to the late Edo period (1800s–1860s). It is an extremely valuable textile that has been carefully preserved and passed down to the present day. BORO refers to cloth made from layers of old fabric that were repeatedly patched and reused over many years, embodying both the wisdom and aesthetic sensibility of traditional Japanese life. In times when resources were scarce, garments, bedding, and futons were never discarded but continually repaired and repurposed. Each stitch carries the memory and passage of family life. In colder regions, such thick BORO pieces were especially essential. This piece has a substantial thickness of about 5 mm, with clear signs of reinforcement through stitching, giving it a remarkable presence among surviving BORO. Measuring approximately 1385 mm × 1485 mm in an almost square format, it evokes the impression of an abstract painting when hung on the wall. The deep and faded shades of indigo, interwoven with countless repair marks, create a rhythmic composition that resonates deeply with the viewer. Every fray, tear, and seam is not a flaw but part of the layered beauty born of time and chance. In a modern interior, BORO functions as a true art piece. It adds warmth and depth to minimalist spaces while quietly telling its story. We recommend displaying it on the wall, where it can be appreciated much like an abstract work of art. For shipping, the textile will be carefully folded and delivered in a compact state. Weight: 1.2kg _________________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
