About the Item

An antique French fine tapestry, circa 1880. A battle scene. About the Tapestry: Antique French Rural Idyllic Tapestry C. Detti This tapestry depicts a detailed fighting scene and dates from the late 19th century. At the lower edge of the tapestry it says " "d'apres C. Detti" which indicates that the subject was not an arbitrary scene, but was in accordance with an art work by an Italian painter called Cesare Auguste Detti who lived in the first half of the 19th century. The weaving is in very good condition, but in keeping with its age could do with some minor cleaning in order to restore the original colours. The whole piece measures 71in tall by 86in wide. Pictured with its wooden baton that has been used for hanging, The tapestry can be posted as is or without the wooden baton to reduce postage cost - weight with wooden baton is 2.6kg. The rear of the tapestry is lined. Overall colours are - Tan, Bronze, Gold, sand and natural threads. About the Artisit: Cesare Auguste Detti: Born Spolete, Italy December 28, 1847;Died Paris, May 19,1914. "Cesare Detti received his formal education at the Accademia di San Luca and worked under Fortuny and Podesti. His first exhibition was in Naples in 1872 followed by another in Rome in 1876. As a result of his success in Italy he began receiving invitations to international exhibitions which caused him to relocate his studio to Paris. Cesare opened his Paris studio in 1876 and remained in Paris for the rest of his life." In 1889 he was awarded a bronze medal at the L'Exposition Universelle. In 1890 he was awarded a silver medal at the L'Exposition Universelle. Cesare Auguste Detti was a magnificent painter, one whose work is in extremely strong demand from European as well as American collectors .
