The history of the depiction of Christ on the cross is rich and varied, evolving over the centuries.
Early depictions: Early Christians avoided depicting the crucifixion. Constantine promoted the cross as a symbol, but without the figure of Christ.
Development of crucifixes: It wasn't until the late 10th century that crucifixes depicting Christ on the cross became common.
Artistic evolution: Byzantine art helped codify depictions, with precise details. Over time, depictions became more realistic, expressing Christ's suffering. The Renaissance brought a visual beauty, while subsequent periods heightened the drama of the Passion.
Several notable paintings depict Christ on the cross, including:
Christ Crucified by Diego Velázquez.
Several paintings titled Christ on the Cross, notably by Michel Dumas and Anthony van Dyck.
