Victorian Sampler, 1850, Sarah Roberts Aged 13. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, light brown, dark brown, gold, pink and black. Verse entitled 'MEDITATION' reads, 'If strong temptation crowd my way, And ills I cannot flee. O give me strength Lord as my day, For Good remember me. If torn with pain disease or Grief, This feeble body see, Give patience rest and kind relief; Hear and remember me.'. Signed and dated, 'Sarah Roberts Aged 13 Years. 1850'. A wonderful set of motifs, featuring a rabbit and a tabby cat. Also, a house with a garden and fir trees, a beehive with bees, birds, potted flowering plants and trees. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with brown paper and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

    Good. A few small holes. No stains. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing wear and chips, the veneer peeling in places. But structurally sound and ready to hang.
