Royal Tichelaar Makkum (1572) is the oldest company in the Netherlands and a worldwide household name in the ceramic field.
The map from Caspar Robles' atlas of 1572 shows a "briccaria" or brick factory on the site where the factory of Royal Tichelaar Makkum now stands, making it the oldest evidence of a long company history. In 1640 the company became a family business and remains so to this day.
In 1960, the company received the Koninklijke (Royal) designation on the occasion of its 300th birthday. Later research showed the company was founded much earlier. As a result, the company celebrated its 400th anniversary in 1994.
Designers who have worked for Tichelaar include Jurgen Bey, Hella Jongerius, Studio Job, Alexander van Slobbe, Roderick Vos, and Marcel Wanders.
The Tichelaar family has controlled the factory from the 1830s to the present. Jan Tichelaar is the thirteenth generation of Tichelaar family members to head the company.
The factory currently works mostly on architectural tiles, and a very limited production of hand painted ceramics.

Studio DeSimoneWayland
Marcello De Simone and Bruce Wayland are the Amsterdam based Italian/American design duo behind Studio DeSimoneWayland. Since 2010 they have been combining their backgrounds in both studio art and art history to create one of a kind wall art. Their medium of choice is ceramic plates, at first combined with paintings in their Altered Perspectives series, and later created in stoneware and porcelain by the artists in their atelier in Amsterdam.
The combination of plates with paintings, as well as handmade ceramics and porcelain has developed into a slight obsession with the forms and shapes of antique table services. This has led to the forms themselves becoming the focus of their latest work which is in unglazed extra white porcelain and coloured stoneware. Their work has been shown in various locations in Europe, and most recently at the "Homo Faber: The Journey of Life" exhibition in Venice from 1 to 30 September, 2024.
For this show, curated by renowned director Luca Guadagnino and architect Niccolò Rosmarini, Studio DeSimoneWayland has created dozens of hand made and hand cast Mont Blanc porcelain pieces combined into a 180 cm long panel. Each piece has textures of antique hand-embroidered linens as a way of preserving cherished heirlooms. In 2022 Studio DeSimoneWayland were included in the prestigious Homo Faber Guide of the best European artist-makers.
