About the Item

Commissioned by Castellani® Jewellers and added to the Castellani® Gemstone Collection is this Banded Lime Green Agate Intaglio. The banded lime green agate was originally set into Victorian seal fob that has been repurposed as an intaglio. Once removed from the fob, our creative team envisioned an Ancient Galley that would be sailing using the multi layers of banding as the sea and waves. The scene also shows stars and the moon in the sky. The galley is the most common type of ship used by the Ancient Phoenicians which is a long, narrow vessel that was propelled by oars. Galleys were used for both trade and war, and they were known for their speed and maneuverability. This wonderful intaglio can be purchased loose or with a custom Castellani® jewel design. Work with our design team to create a pendant or ring to show the beautiful and interesting carving. The Agate intaglio weighs 17.65ct and measures 20.96x18.0x5.01mm.

Castellani Ancient Roman Agate Intaglio Gold Ring
By Castellani
Located in New York, NY
Castellani® has selected this Ancient Roman Agate Intaglio for the "Cleopatra" Ring Setting. The intaglio dates to the 3rd to 7th Century. The intaglio is both black and white agate, which is a hard stone and very good for carving. The agate has two layers of color, black on the top and white at the bottom. The agate intaglio is solid and is one piece. The carver was able to use these two color layers to give dimension and detail. The Column and Angel on the left wings are white and the balance is all black. The Carver knew the material he/she was carving and used this to create this very unique scene. The intaglio shows two angels standing on either side of a column/pillar looking at the bust of a man on top of the pillar. The angels are female and male. The bust on the pedestal is of a male. The intaglio is set below the frame. The frame flairs out to a subtle point on the sides and has a flat surface. The "Cleopatra" ring design was a style that Castellani created in the 1860's and was inspired by Ancient Roman rings...

Giovanni & Luigi Pichler 1790 Rare Agate Carved Intaglio of Mercury in 14kt Gold
Located in Miami, FL
Important carved intaglio ring by Giovanni or Luigi Pichler (1773-1854). An extremely rare intaglio seal piece, created in Rome Italy by the Pichler's Atelier in the late early 18th century, circa 1795. It was carved in an oval cabochon cut shape, from a triple layered translucent bluish agate. The intaglio seal depicts the naked figure of the Roman goddess Mercury, in running flying position to the right with a helmet and winged sandals. Raising his left hand and holding a trophy with the right hand. A butterfly or flying insect at the right. Signed, Pichler in Greek (ΠΙΧΛΕΡ), for Giovanni or Luigi Pichler (1773-1854). This seal has been made after the famous Flying Mercury (Mercure volant) statue, created by the mannerist sculptor Giambologna (Giovanni da Bologna 1524-1608), a Flemish-Italian sculptor that work all his life mostly in Florence in Italy. One of the versions of the actual sculpture is located at the Bargello Museum in Florence Italy and the other at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Mercury. in Latin Mercurius, in Roman religion is the god of shopkeepers and merchants, travelers and transporters of goods, and thieves and tricksters. He is commonly identified with the Greek Hermes...
