Persian Turquoise Necklace with Diamond Clasp circa 1950s Immaculate

About

This is a necklace of very fine, natural and untreated Persian turquoise beads, some of which are streaked ever so slightly with their silvery pyrite matrix. Vivid turquoise blue, the 71 beads graduate in size from the smallest beside the clasp at 5.42mm to the largest at 10.39. This is quite a spectacular necklace in the flesh. It measures a luxurious 25" not including the 18k white gold and diamond clasp, 26 ½ inches all together. The diamond-shaped gold clasp is set with a dozen small (2mm) diamonds that are white and clean. An 8.5mm navette-shaped cabochon of turquoise is set West to East atop the clasp. On the reverse side you will find a clever catch I've not come across before. A white gold "strap" un-clicks from the center of the rear of the clasp and the tongue-end can be released. It works brilliantly. Turquoise is a relatively porous stone and blue turquoise frequently turns green. Copper gives Persian turquoise its glorious blue coloring. But you know how copper turns green if it's exposed to the elements? That oxidization happens with the copper inside turquoise, too. Body oil and sweat can hasten this oxidization process, which is why you frequently see splotchy green areas on Persian blue turquoise beads. But these beads are not marred by that green oxidization; they are the perfect "Persian blue" and with highly desirable thread-thin streaks of matrix visible on many of the beads. These are very hard, high-quality beads and they're much less porous than lesser quality turquoise. The beads have no cracks or chips and all the diamonds are secure in their settings. This necklace has been treated as the rare and spectacular treasure that it is and that careful handling has made the necklace's beauty endure. With care, this necklace will remain beautiful for generations to come. Fine turquoise necklaces like this are becoming more difficult to find because the popularity of turquoise —which has been prized as a gem for at least two thousand years— has increased exponentially since the 1950s. It was also in the 1950s that "stabilized" turquoise became a thing. Normally I am against all gem treatments but some turquoise stones are so fragile, you kind of have to stabilize them in order to wear and appreciate them. The finest turquoise is also the hardest and doesn't require stabilization. It takes a high polish, which these beads display. A fine piece for the collector, the turquoise lover or the investor.
