Georgian Choker Necklaces

GEORGIAN STYLE

Georgian jewelry is named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). A slew of beautiful pieces were produced during the period, and today antique Georgian rings, necklaces and other accessories are coveted by fine jewelry collectors.

There are certain features that distinguish jewelry from this era, including the fact that pieces from the 18th and early 19th centuries were handmade (so don’t let the absence of a maker’s mark lead you to believe otherwise). Antique Georgian jewelry also has a certain “look.” It’s a bit gray because stones were often set in silver, and because stonecutting techniques were not as advanced as they are today, the gems do not possess the level of sparkle to which we have become accustomed.

Intricate metalworking techniques such as repoussé (the hammering of metal into ornate designs) and cannetille (a method of working the gold wire to make it look woven) allowed goldsmiths to really flex their muscles. These gold pieces, either on their own or combined with gemstones, made for highly original and dramatic jewelry. The era also saw pieces with ornately woven strands of human hair.

Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. These were often cut in the shape of a cabochon or teardrop. It was fashionable to combine garnets or rubies with seed pearls. In Georgian diamond rings, popular cuts for diamonds included rose, old mine and table. Around the 1780s, paste jewelry, or hand-cut glass on foil, was used to imitate diamonds.

A single row jewelled necklace and earrings, att. F. Winter for C Dior, 1950s
Located in Greyabbey, County Down
A charming 'riviere' necklace and matching earrings, attributed and thought to be designed by Francis Winter for Christian Dior, in the early 1950s. Constructed of individual deep 'pools of faceted light', most clear, though some have a hand tinted/painted hue, this is a very simple but striking design, very much on the French style and the glorious style of the early designs of the House of Dior. Francis Winter was a celebrated jeweller who was in charge of all jewellery creation and production, at the House of Dior from its beginings and through into the 1950s. Made of beautifully faceted and deep, some softly tinted, pools of paste, each placed in an antiqued decorative setting. The necklace and earrings has an overall 18th century feel to it, expressing Dior's reminiscence of 18th century France, a looking back to more romantic and opulent times. A very classic simple design, whose every stone softly glitters and sparkles. Christian Dior was born into a wealthy family in 1905, being raised in the Normandy seaside town of Granville. Working first for Robert Piguet...

Georgian 18 Karat Gold Cannetille Carved Shell Cameo Birth of Cupid Rivière
Located in New York, NY
Georgian 18k Yellow Gold Cannetille Carved Shell Cameo and Persian Turquoise Birth of Cupid Rivière c.1800 With wars raging across Europe throughout the early years of the 19th century, austerity was the order of the day. Jewelry was comprised of thinly pressed precious metals, and gemstones were either substantially smaller or replaced entirely by something of sentimental value (such as lockets that held a strand of hair) or meticulously crafted cameos. This magnificent necklace from the first 20 years of the 1800s is a masterful example of the innovation born out of the necessities of the time. Each plate is comprised of tiny 18-karat yellow wires meticulously wrapped into an intricately ornate design through a method known as Cannetille, with tiny drops of Persian turquoise adding an accent of color. The center of each plate tells the story of the birth of Cupid through a series of immaculate cameos carved from a single shell. The clasp plate appropriately features a cameo of a pair of hands clasped in friendship, reminiscent of a fede gimmel ring. A shining symbol of love from one of Europe’s most trying periods, this necklace is a gorgeous piece of wearable history. Additional Information: Period: Late 18th. Century Year: c.1800 Material: 18k Yellow Gold Cannetille and Carved Shell Cameo and Persian Turquoise Riviere...

Antique Paste Silver Cluster Necklace
Located in Baltimore, MD
Lovely paste cluster necklace set in silver and backed in gold. Paste jewelry refers to jewelry made from a type of leaded glass invented in the late 1600's and was used to simulate precious gemstones. Paste achieved its greatest prominence in the 18th century, when several discoveries, including that of English flint glass as well as improvements in candlelight, the perfect illumination for paste jewelry, helped usher in antique paste jewelry. Jewelry artisans carved leaded glass into "gemstones" with such a degree of technical perfection that the metal links could scarcely be seen and each paste stone is carved to fit perfectly next to the neighboring stone. The individually carved pastes were carefully set into mounts to create beautiful designs, which were made into into necklaces, rings, earrings, belts and shoe buckles. Paste jewelry was often considered "traveling" jewelry by high society women who preferred not to carry their precious gems when they traveled, and paste jewelry became very much sought after in 18th and 19th centuries. The pastes on our cluster Riviere are slightly graduated in size and look elegant and as a choker about the neck. The necklace has a Georgian closed back and the paste clusters are mounted in silver but set in gold. There is a small clasp that tucks away unseen under the largest paste stone, to hold an optional pendant (this was commonly done on Georgian rivieres...
