The handcrafted, 19-karat gold design features three masts at full sail, the latter decorated with elements typical of ships from the period being represented by the charm. During the 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and brought on what is referred to as "archaeological revival jewelry," or "Egyptian revival jewelry." The initial Egyptian Revival period flourished from the 1820s and became extremely popular, continuing well into the 1920s. The style was inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery, such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics. A fabulous Italian micro mosaic scarab pendant/locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Tiny tiles with vivid colors of glass have been hand set into the raised image of a scarab beetle, which sits at the center of this piece. The lovely scarab beetle has varying shades of blue, green, black, gold and red, with amazing detail. The arms, legs, antennae and wings of the beetle are also incorporated into the background, which is a circular bed of white mosaic tiles. The pendant is set in an 18kt yellow gold oval bezel setting. The beetle has a wonderful 3-dimensional design which is bordered by a twisted gold wirework border and the back reveals a glass-covered spot for a favorite photograph.
