18K Frog Climbing on a 14K Leaf Hanging from a Necklace of Baroque Akoya Pearls
About the Item
Here's something you're not going to see on every other gal in town! This necklace is composed of repurposed and new elements and it's truly one-of-a-kind.
The frog with his rando elbow blingo was a brooch, and our research indicates he's a knockoff of a well-known design by Henry Dunay for Neiman Marcus in the aughts. As will happen with popular jewelry, it didn't take long before similar designs popped up by other makers -- same rough finish, same extended leg, same realistic sculpting and the same emerald eyes.
A couple of years ago, we actually acquired this pin AND one of the original Dunay frogs from a customer whose mother collected frog brooches. We bought the entire collection and have been in refilling the swamp with 'em ever since! (See the last photo in the array for a group shot!)
Now, when you are a goldsmith, like Eytan Brandes, and you acquire twenty-five frog brooches, you're not going to turn around and try to SELL twenty-five frog brooches because (a) brooches, life cufflinks and sweater clips, ain't quite the universal wardrobe staple they used to be; and (b) frogs make great pendants! What's better than a frog on your sweater? A frog on your neck!
Eytan likes doing these kinds of conversions and he likes recycling stuff and he likes combining things, so he gave this frog a place to perch. The "leaf" was a minor part of a very dated, very large 14K gold diamond spray brooch, most of which has gone to meet its melter maker. But Eytan kept one of the modern, openwork leaves, removed all the pin crap, added a double bale structure, and now this escapee from a ghastly brooch has the happy job of giving our frog a permanent leg-up on life. One detail we like is that the leaf has a slight rosy hue, which is typical of some older 14 karat gold formulations (which used more copper than we do today). This affords some nice contrast with the strictly yellow of the 18K yellow gold frog
Together they hang from a string of beautiful baroque Akoya pearls from our trusted supplier, George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls. Seven Seas deals exclusively in saltwater pearls -- Japanese Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian. No freshwater. Nothing from China. Baroque Akoya pearls aren't as popular in the United States as they are in Europe, but we love them, especially when they're like these: top luster, frosty white color, pink overtones, giggly-great shapes. Instead of knots, the pearls are separated by beads of vivid green chrome diopside, one of our favorite gems for beading because the piercing green color is completely natural.
We made this necklace specifically for our frog and the pendant is not removable, but we're not inflexible on the point. If you would prefer the pendant without the pearls, just let us know. (The frog and the leaf, on the other hand, are joined together permanently, in a very soldered kind of way.)

This necklace features one of Eytan Brandes' signature designs - a dancer spinning in her own web of movement. This version includes a little extra -- a barqoue freshwater pearl "cloud" that our dancing dervish seems to be plucking out of the air.
The pendant is meticulously set with 51 tiny round diamonds in various sizes up to 1.3mm; Eytan wanted them to look like they just naturally collected into little pools of light. These diamonds are all natural (i.e., earth-mined) and untreated stones with a total diamond weight of 0.34 carats. Our supplier rated this parcel G-H color and high SI or low VS clarity.
The pearl is a freshwater baroque, glossy white and chosen specifically for its shape: our dancer appears is pressing her cloud at both ends, so we wanted a pearl that appeared to be a bit smooshed-looking -- like a pillow being caught between two hands.
