Art Nouveau Equestrian Horse 14K Gold Diamond Horseshoe Locket on Chain

About the Item

Dating to the Art Nouveau period, this superb gold horseshoe shaped locket features a very dimensional/high relief depiction of a horse surrounded by a foliate design, surmounted by a fiery old European cut diamond. Perfect for an Equestrian or horse lover. Tested and marked as 14K gold, the front and interior retain much of the original high karat bloomed finish. Measuring approximately 1 1/4 x just over 1 1/4 inches - without the bail, the locket has a total drop length of approximately 1 5/8 inches when the oversize bail is included. Set within the center of a flower blossom at the top center of the locket and estimated at approximately .12 to .14 carats, the old European cut diamond is bright and lively, with color judged to be in the G-H-I ranger of near-colorless and eye-clean clarity in the SI range. I see no nicks, chips or scratches, just a little wear to the platinum topped setting with milgrain edging. The locket opens from the right-hand side and closes with a nice "click." Inside, the locket no longer has glazing or frames, but does have the original small mark of "14K." The reverse of the locket has a beautiful monogram of either "MT" or "MJ." The locket came to me on a substantial 14K gold rope chain, which is included in the purchase. Measuring approximately 24 inches long, the chain is marked "14K" and with a maker's mark of "OR." Together, the total weight of the necklace is 22.23 grams on my scale. The locket on its own is 14.19 grams. Overall, the condition is very good, with only light wear. As mentioned above, the bloomed finish is no longer present on the sides and reverse of the locket. It's nearly pristine inside, and most remains on the front, barring at some of the highest points of the design. (though the underlying gold is not too different in color from the high karat finish - it's not super rosy colored the way it is in some bloomed pieces) A particularly beautifully designed locket - ready for its new home.
