Antique Onyx Rose Cut Diamond Gold Initial Locket
About the Item
This superb Victorian period locket is carved from a solid piece of glossy black onyx with an applied gold & silver monogram of three initials set with very sparkly old rose cut diamonds. The reverse has a glazed compartment to hold a cherished photo, lock of hair or other small memento.
The elegantly styled initials are S C G.
Substantial and impressive, the locket with black enameled diamond-set bail weighs 28.03 grams on my scale. The locket itself measures approximately 1 3/4 x 1 3/8 inches (45 x 35 mm) not including the bail. With the bail, the total drop length is approximately 2 1/2 inches or 62 mm.
Five graduated rose cut diamonds are set within the enamel bail, while I count a further 65 diamonds within the beautiful monogram. No diamonds are missing, though a few seem more rustic and may be old replacements.
The onyx is in wonderful condition - still smooth and glossy. The beveled glazing of the locket compartment shows a little wear at the edges, including a scratch at the lower right and a few nibbles at the top left. The large bail which will accommodate nearly any chain, shows wear and likely touch ups to its black enamel, especially the top and back (please see my photos). It blends in rather well and doesn't jump out to me.
An old piece of light green ribbon or fabric remains inside the locket compartment; the gold frame remains in very good condition.
This beauty is ready to wear and enjoy - it would look especially amazing on an antique gold chain.
