Classical Carved Red Coral 18K Gold Double-Sided Amulet Medallion Necklace

About the Item

Beautiful, estate double-sided natural red coral 18K yellow gold medallion on 18K yellow gold chain depicting Venus and Vulcan. 20th Century Medallion: 42mm by 32mm Chain length: 450 mm Red coral has been associated with protective amuletic powers for thousands of years. Italian coral jewelry is prized for the quality of workmanship which goes back to the early 19th century. In 1805, King Ferdinand IV granted a licence to Paul Barthelemy Martin, a successful coral broker from the South of France to run the Real Fabbrica de Coralliwas, specializing in fine carved coral jewelery, objects and cameos. The location of this enterprise was in the port town of Torre del Greco, situated between Naples and Pompeii. Martin was given a ten year coral-working monopoly and proceeded to train local artisans to create beautifully detailed coral jewels and carvings worthy of Royal patronage. Torre del Greco remains the epicenter of Italian coral jewelry, catering to international clientelle. Many of the pieces are in the collections of museums worldwide. Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and Boucheron are among the jewelers who commissioned Torre del Greco artisans to create coral carvings for their designs. The double-sided medallion depicts Vulcan standing at his anvil with one hand raised to strike his forge while Venus is portrayed in profile on the other side. Vulcan was the God of Fire, son of Jupiter and Juno and husband to Venus. A talented blacksmith who created jewelry, arms and armor, thrones and chariots, his smithy was believed to be underneath Mount Etna in Sicily. Vulcanalia, the festival of Vulcan, is celebrated each year of August 23. Vulcan is the patron god to trades related to fire including chefs, bakers, confectioners, metalsmiths and jewelers. 14K Gold Signature Classical Revival Aphrodite Medallion
Located in Venice, CA
Created as part of our signature collection, this 14k gold intaglio medallion depicts Aphrodite lounging luxuriously, surrounded by winged putti who seem to be attending to her every need. A sensuous tree climbs across the backdrop, suggesting the scene is set in a beautiful garden. Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love and beauty, referred to as Venus in Roman mythology. She is the ruler of fertility, pleasure, and desire. Using a rare bronze intaglio from the late 1700’s, we created a mold and cast the pendant in gold. We hand-carved depth into the mold so that the details would pop on the contemporary medallion as beautifully as they do on the original antique intaglio, and then lovingly added a gentle patina by hand to the finished piece. The intaglio used as a mold for this medallion is attributed to the James Tassie workshop, circa the late 18th century. Born in 1735, Tassie was a Scottish stonemason who invented a glassy white paste perfect for replicating gemstones. Tassie was commissioned across Europe, first by Catherine the Great of Russia, then by the Wedgwood factory, to create imitation gemstones and elaborately carved intaglios. In 1773, most of the infamous blue and white cameos in the Wedgwood catalogue were cast from molds made by Tassie. The artist left behind a collection of over 15,800 intricate pieces of artwork. Many of Tassie’s intaglios...

14K Gold Signature Classical Revival Cupid Medallion
Located in Venice, CA
Created as part of our signature collection, this 14k gold intaglio medallion depicts Cupid seated on top of a bow quiver. Cupid, the god of love and attraction, draws his arrow, ready to strike an unsuspecting victim with the power of love. Beneath him are rolling clouds that Cupid rides, as if on a ship. The image is outlined with a border of three lines to complete the beautiful image. 14K Gold Poseidon Signature Classical Revival Medallion Pendant
Located in Venice, CA
Created as part of our signature collection, this 14k gold intaglio medallion depicts Poseidon, god of the sea, riding two hippocampi across turbulent ocean waves. The oval medallion hangs horizontally from an oversized bail, and the texture of the waves catches the light and gives the pendant an added sparkle. The medallion is pictured here on our Signature Handmade Dog Bone Link Chain. Many of Tassie’s intaglios were cast in glass-paste or plaster, which could eventually break. However, some were cast into bronze—which have survived for centuries. These pieces are rare treasures that capture Tassie’s incredible skill. We love the Classical Revival imagery found in James Tassie’s work, which often depicts scenes from Greek and Roman mythology. These myths speak to human nature in a way that makes it just as evocative today as it was in the Classical Revival era that James Tassie worked within. The beauty of the images and timelessness of the stories were what drew us to these intaglios and inspired us to revive the centuries-old art for contemporary jewelry. Just as Tassie revived these ancient images, we are reviving Tassie’s work. Tradition is part of what makes the art of jewelry so meaningful. The Poseidon medallion...
