The emerald cameo, made in the late 17th century and depicting Berenice, was mounted as a pendant by Carlo Giuliano in the 19th century. Berenice, Macedonian queen and wife of Tolomeo I, constitutes an unusual although sought-after depiction since, after her death, she was attributed divine powers. The fact that this ancient emerald cameo was used by Carlo Giuliano in the half of the 19th century to create a pendant is an example of its value and quality. Carlo Giuliano was a renowned jeweller and goldsmith who began his career in Naples, initially collaborating with Alessandro Castellani, a leading figure of the neo-archaeological style. In 1860 he moved to London, where he worked with some of England's most prestigious jewellers, including Robert Phillips and Hancocks & Co., before going into independent business in 1875. In this case, Carlo Giuliano wanted to celebrate the importance of the origins of a mystical figure like that of Berenice by further embellishing the frame of the pendant with an engraving of the pyramids on the back of the cameo.
