About the Item
This sterling silver pendant holds an authentic Roman coin dating back to the 2nd century AD, depicting Emperor Marcus Aurelius, surrounded by 8 sapphires. The reverse side features the seated Goddess Victoria, divine personification of victory, often shown with wings and a laurel wreath, celebrating triumph in both military and civic life.
Marcus Aurelius, who ruled from 161 to 180 AD, was not only an emperor but also one of antiquity's most profound thinkers. A Stoic philosopher and author of Meditations—a timeless work on inner strength, self-discipline, and virtue—he led the empire through turbulent times with remarkable composure and moral clarity. His reign marked the end of the Pax Romana, a long-standing period of peace and prosperity within the Roman Empire.
Born in 121 AD during Emperor Hadrian’s rule, Marcus came from a prominent Roman family. After the death of his father, he was raised by his mother, Domitia Lucilla, and grandfather. His path to power was shaped by Hadrian’s political planning: upon the death of his initial heir, Aelius Caesar, Hadrian named Antoninus Pius as successor on the condition that he adopt Marcus and Lucius Verus. Marcus later married Antoninus’ daughter, Faustina, strengthening his position within the imperial family.
Marcus Aurelius co-ruled with Lucius Verus and later with his own son, Commodus. Despite war, plague, and personal loss, he remained committed to the Stoic ideals of reason and duty, becoming a symbol of the philosopher-king. His legacy endures not only in Roman history but also in philosophy and leadership across centuries.
