About the Item
A rare and poetic piece of 19th-century craftsmanship, this antique locket (circa 1850–1870) takes the form of a finely constructed copper orb, hand-enameled in white and pink to represent the Earth in soft, abstracted topography. Both symbolic and sculptural, the orb twists open into two hemispheres, revealing a hidden compartment—suggestive of secrets kept, journeys imagined, or keepsakes cherished.
Whether worn as a personal talisman or collected as an object of historical significance, the locket embodies a romantic 19th-century fascination with exploration, geography, and the natural world.
Measuring approximately 1.2 inches from the top of the bail to the bottom and 0.8 inches in diameter, the piece weighs 6.23 grams. It is in very good antique condition, with some minor wear and small enamel losses consistent with age and the delicate nature of early enamel work. The orb opens and closes securely.
The metal content has been professionally verified through X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis and traditional jeweler’s acid testing, confirming the use of copper and enamel in its construction.
