After the Great Depression began in the United States in 1929, to keep her popular European-style costume jewelry affordable among fashionable ladies, Haskell began using less expensive imported handcrafted glass beads, which included Czech and German pressed glass. Initially when she opened her handmade ready-to-wear costume-jewelry business in 1926 in New York City's downtown McAlpin Hotel, she had used only the finest Parisian glass beads and findings like French couturiers including Coco Chanel who soon became her competition. which Haskell promoted with the French name of her first boutique Le Bijou de L'Heure.

During the early 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and introduced what is referred to as "Egyptian Revival Jewelry." The first Egyptian Revival period began around the 1820’s, inspired by the unearthing of ancient Egyptian ruins during that time. Images such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics became popular motifs in fashion. Pieces were often crafted using a material known as Egyptian Paste or "faience", which is the oldest form of non-clay glazed ceramic and usually found in a range of blue and green colors.
In the 1920’s, there was another unearthing of treasures, making the trend popular once again. This scarab pendant is from that era—the third Egyptian Revival period. The scarab is a turqoise colored faience bead with brown and beige overtones in its recesses that delineate the shape of the beetle. There are hieroglyphics on the back of the scarab. At the bottom of the scarab is a round 14k gold ball that extends as a wire through the bead and forms a bale at the top.
The pendant measures 15/16“ from the bottom of the ball to the top of the bail. The scarab measures 1/2” x 3/8”. The bale measures 5 mm. The piece weighs 1.63 grams. The gold in unmarked and acid tests as 14k.

This handsome Victorian Holbeinesque pendant comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Holbeinesque is a term used to describe Victorian jewellery that was made in the style of the Renaissance, particularly inspired by the Northern Renaissance and the paintings of Hans Holbein. Holbein himself produced sketches of the jewellery worn at the Tudor court, and the sketches were used as reference points by Victorian jewellery designers and craftsmen. An Holbein style amethyst, diamond, enamel, natural pearl and gold pendant, circa 1865
It is oval, carrying in its center an amethyst in a set, each punctuated by a rose-cut diamond. The entourage is enamelled in polychrome cloisonné, also enhanced with rose-cut diamonds. The border is of small fine pearls and a square pendant in tassel. The reverse is finely engraved with arabesques and foliage.
