About the Item
This rectangular Art Nouveau buckle is a stunning example of the movement's elegant and organic design, blending flowing lines and natural motifs. The buckle features intricate papyrus leaves and floral decor, both hallmarks of Art Nouveau, with their graceful curves and attention to natural forms. The papyrus leaves are subtly enamelled in pastel shades, just as the floral elements show in these soft shades of pink, white and subtle blue accents, creating a harmonious and ethereal palette. Gold accents emphasize the contours of the design and add a sense of luxury and warmth to the piece.
The black enamel serves as the background, providing a striking contrast that allows the vibrant colors to stand out. The play of color and the soft, flowing forms create a sense of movement, typical of Art Nouveau jewelry. This era, spanning from the late 19th to early 20th century, emphasized nature-inspired designs, with themes of flora, fauna, and the human form often rendered in sensual, flowing lines.
In keeping with the period, the buckle also reflects a preference for craftsmanship and artistic expression, with the enameling technique adding both texture and depth. The use of translucent and opaque enamel to render lifelike motifs is a common feature, and the organic forms of leaves and flowers are stylized yet imbued with a sense of vitality and elegance. The buckle is not just a functional object but a wearable piece of art, celebrating the beauty of nature and the artistry of the jeweler.
Due to the age of the buckle, the enamel has faded in some places.

Antique Art Nouveau Buckle Peacock Feather Piel Frères Polychrome Enamel Brass
By Piel Frères
Located in Munich, Bavaria
This outstanding Art Nouveau buckle in the shape of a peacock feather has been designed and executed by Piel Frères, Paris around 1900.
An identical buckle is published in Vivienne Becker's book 'Fabulous Fakes', page 91, Grafton Books 1988.
The same buckle, executed in silver, is published in
'Pariser Schmuck', catalogue of the exhibition of the same name page 275. That catalogue describes the buckle as ' a peacockfeather with short quill, the eye of the feather is represented by a kidney shaped blue glas cabochon on green green shimmering metal foil'.
Piel Frères were an important firm of jewellers based in Paris, they are mentioned in the 3 volume enzyclopedic publication
'La Bijouterie Française ' written by Henry Vever.
