Spanish Colonial 1766 One Real Silver Cob Coin 18K Gold Ring
About the Item
An irregular Spanish colonial 1 Reales "cob" coin from the famous Potosi mine in Bolivia has the date of 1766 along with the assayer mark on one side. Cobs were roughly shaped and fairly crudely stamped coins that were made at the local mints of the prolific mines of the new world Spanish colonies. The famous "piece of eight" from pirate times refers to an 8 reales coin from that period which circulated widely throughout the world. This coin is set in a Steven Battelle designed rough line texture bezel setting atop an organically textured shank currently sized 7. It is resizable. The ring is sent with a lifetime laminated coin certificate of authenticity.

After a chance trip to SouthEast Asia in 1987, Steven Battelle became fascinated with the jewelry and iconology from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Asia. Eventually forming a partnership with a dedicated group of Balinese village goldsmiths using painstaking handmade techniques, they together create unique designs that incorporate those timeless and classic motifs. He incorporates primarily cabochon gemstones as well as ancient Greek and Roman coins, each piece capturing the feelings of a bygone age.
