Magnificent Art Deco 1925 Sterling Silver Horse Racing Trophy Pimlico Cup

Details: We are proud to offer this magnificent early American solid sterling silver trophy which was expertly crafted by Schofield Co Of Baltimore for the winner of the Pimlico cup in 1925 .
Very few of these trophies have survived since the race was first run in 1919 - The Pimlico Cup was postponed from 1931 through 1943 as a result of cutbacks necessitated by the Great Depression and the entry of the United States into World War II.
Only four Pimlico Cup trophies are known to have survived from this era- of which this is one, incidentally at the time of writing this is the oldest known example.
This trophy has a very majestic stature - standing at over 13 inches tall and 17.50 inches wide, it is the epitome of excellence for the winner of such a prestigious race.
On each side it has two unbridled thoroughbred horse heads that serve as handles,elegant Art Nouveau influenced font lettering (Repousse) and a five layer decorative band at the base.
Applied at the center of the base is there is the Baltimore State Seal also in sterling silver- a homage to the city where the race was held and also incidentally the home the silversmiths who created this piece.
On the opposite side and there is a JC intertwined monogram decorated with stirrups and a riding crop which referred to the the owners of the winning horse, (Jones brothers Oil executives) of Audley Farm Stable .
What is unusual about this piece is the dedication - it was done by hand using the repousse method, not applied which only adds to the high quality workmanship - The dedication reads " Autumn Meeting...

Very rare and beautiful perfume bottle, created in Paris France by Jean Louis Scherrer, back in the late 20th century. This exotic perfume bottle was made as a promotion for the launching of his famous Scherrer 2 perfume in 1986. Carefully crafted in the art deco style with skyscraper patterns, in solid sterling silver of .925/.999 with high polished finish. Fitted with a lid and a pistil to applicate the perfume and scents.
Weight: 130.95 Grams, (83.94 Dwt).
Measurements: 86 mm by 24 mm by 18 mm (3.40 x 0.94 x 0.71 Inches).
Hallmarks: Stamped with French marks, the silver assay mark, the maker's mark of SF inside a lozange cartouche, the edition number and signed, "JEAN LOUIS SCHERRER PARIS 925 Sterling #0202"
Edition: Number 0202 from 1000 pieces produced.
Jean-Louis Scherrer born in Paris in February. He was a Parisian fashion designer and couturier. Although he had name recognition and was known for his work, he is mainly noted for being the first couture designer to be sacked from their own-name label in 1992. Scherrer trained as a dancer at the Conservatoire de Paris until he injured his back, which put him out of action for three months. He then decided to focus on fashion design, and in 1956, joined Christian Dior as an assistant designer alongside Yves Saint Laurent. Following Dior's death in 1957, Scherrer worked under Saint Laurent, and then for Louis Féraud, before launching his own fashion house in 1962 on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré with the backing of Jacques Chabrol, a French millionaire. While early utensils were often shaped from clay, wood or bone, silversmiths later crafted flatware from precious metal. In the 19th century, mass production of electroplated flatware made silver utensils accessible to the middle class. Now, antique and vintage silver, flatware and silver-plate objects for dining and the home are heritage pieces reflecting this history of design.
Silver spoons were so prized in 15th-century England that people would travel with the valuable utensils. Forks in the 17th century were frequently made with steel and likewise only available to the upper class. Silver flatware continued to be produced in small workshops in the 18th century and was a luxury reserved for the elite. When George I came to the throne in 1714, the silver dining service — including plates, dishes, soup tureens, chargers and sauceboats — became all-important.
Innovative manufacturing techniques such as the electroplating process in the 19th century would transform silversmithing with industrialization. Sheffield plate was used from 1750 to 1880 and involved a fusion method to fabricate everything from knife handles to serveware. French industrial chemist Henri de Ruolz discovered a gilding and silver-plating process for metals in 1841, with the silver-like results so celebrated that Napoleon III ordered a 3,000-piece flatware set. The expansion of table service in the Victorian era also led to an increasing number of flatware and serving pieces in a canteen, or cutlery chest, all with specific uses, from toast forks to butter picks.
While affordable metal flatware is widely available today, historic brands including Gorham Manufacturing Company — whose legendary contribution to the history of silver making started in 1831 — and Christofle continue the tradition of silver and silver-plate flatware.
