About the Item

Small 925/ooo silver tumbler made by Pampaloni Firenze Italia, weight g 80, length cm 9, height cm 6, base diameter cm 4.5. Based on original sketches by Roman artist Giovanni Maggi from 1602. Roman painter Giovanni Maggi was described as a man of cheerful disposition and a great lover of the comic and bizarre. In 1604 he dedicated his "Bichierografia" to Cardinal del Monte, Francesco Maria Bourbon del Monte Santa Maria, representative of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Rome, the famous art collector who also commissioned some of Caravaggio's most important paintings. Maggi's work consisted of four codices, now preserved in the Uffizi in Florence, containing a collection of more than a thousand extravagant and amusing "drawings of glasses," and, as they said at the time, not only of glasses but also of vases. Maggi was inspired by the amusing models produced in Medici factories and by ornamental sculpture and garden architecture. The taste for the picturesque is evident in the glasses representing musical instruments, animals and flowers, numbers and letters, keys and hammers, tangled bodies, human and horse legs.
