About the Item

Crafted by one of the oldest and most respected watchmaker's in the world, this Swiss pocket watch by the firm of Jules Jurgensen is a masterpiece both inside and out. Made for and presented to the General Superintendent of Transportation for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company, D.W.C. Rowland, this exquisite timepiece is encased in an 18K multi-colored gold hunting case of absolutely breathtaking artistry, featuring a steam locomotive adorned with a white diamond-set searchlight on the front, and Rowland's elaborately rendered monogram on the reverse. The crown of the watch is placed at the 3 o'clock position and is topped by a faceted ruby, and the time is indicated on a lovely white enameled dial with blued steel hands, Roman chapters and a subsidiary seconds dial at the 6 o'clock position. The interior workings of this watch are as awe-inspiring as the exterior craftsmanship. The nickel lever movement with vernier regulator is jeweled through the hammers with a slide repeat on gongs. The chronograph function is activated by a button located and easily accessed at the 12 o'clock position. This timepiece incorporates what is considered Jurgensen's most important patent, which allowed the setting of the watch hands to be done by moving the bow (the loop above the crown) forward, known as "bow setting". Born into a family of renowned watchmakers, Jules Jurgensen took over the family firm in 1838, crafting timepieces under the name Jules Jurgensen Copenhagen. Throughout the course of the firm's 200+ year history, it has garnered numerous awards and received an appointment to the royal Danish court. Today, the Jurgensen name continues to be synonymous with superlative quality, workmanship, and ingenuity, with exceptional specimens such as this chronograph being particularly prized. The interior of the case bears the inscription: "A token of Esteem / TO / D.W.C. Rowland / from / the Employees of the / Louisville & Nashville / R.R. Co. / Louisville, Ky. / April 1884" This watch is fully marked, bearing the mark of Jules Jurgensen, the mark indicating 18K gold as well as the serial number "14062". The interior rim is also marked "PATENT 1867 JANUARY 15" indicating the use of Jurgensen's "bow setting" mechanism. The face is signed "Jules Jurgensen Copenhagen" 55mm diameter
