Rolex 1964 America's Cup Championship Commemoration Submariner Wristwatch, Presented by Rolex to Daniel Putnam Brown, Jr.

"Even the most rare examples of Rolex watches are seldom one-of-a-kind, but this is one of those truly exceptional pieces"- Fourtane

In 1851, the sailing yacht America was the victor in a race around the Isle of Wight in England. The trophy that was presented to the winning team was donated to the New York Yacht Club and renamed the America's Cup in 1857. To this day, the America's Cup remains the most esteemed of yacht races and its prize the longest-running active trophy in international sports.

The regatta is a display of the fastest and finest sailing skill and a showcase for advanced sail and boat design; today it is also noted for the wealthy entrepreneurs and luxury brands which sponsor this prestigious event. The 2013 America's Cup will take place in San Francisco Bay, at the Golden Gate Yacht Club, home of the defending champion Oracle Team USA.

Rolex promotes golf tournaments, equestrian events, motor sports, cultural and arts performances, exploration challenges and yacht regattas. The company frequently rewards those who triumph in sport, exploration and philanthropy with a Rolex timepiece.

Fourtane is excited to offer for sale the Submariner presented by Rolex to Mr. Daniel Putnam Brown, Jr. in honor of his success defending the 1964 America's Cup. Even without this extraordinary pedigree, this watch would be of interest to any discerning collector, however, for the sailing enthusiast, its provenance makes this a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

This Submariner, Ref. 5513, with pointy crown guards has never been polished. The watch remains in entirely original condition, retaining its original crown, bracelet, hands, dial, crystal and bezel insert. The gilt dial has achieved a beautiful patina. This is an early example, with an underline beneath Oyster Perpetual, a "Swiss-only" dial (where only the word "Swiss" appears on the lower edge) listing the meters in the depth rating before the feet.

The riveted bracelet is dated 1964 and stamped "Rolex USA". The watch is accompanied by a letter of provenance and photographs from Mr. Brown. This watch marks a milestone in the storied history of the America's Cup and is among the best Rolex presentation watches to come to market and it could be considered the of the most important historical watches in the sport of sailing.
